Sherborne golfer on track to win the Real Open Golf Championship

An internet specialist from Sherborne has lowered his handicap from 12 to 5 in less than three years - putting him in line to compete at the Belfry in a new amateur golf tournament. Ed Elliot-Square (30) has been devoting all the spare hours he can find to improving his game, with view to winning a place in the final of the 2008 Real Open Golf championship.

"I'm making a serious bid to make the final and hopefully take the cup," says Ed, who plays regularly at the Sherborne Golf Club. "I've been regularly playing under my handicap, but I won't be resting on my laurels as there's always the possibility of a few stalking horses, holding back on their scores, and coming in towards the end."

The Real Open Golf grand final will be held at the Belfry on 9 May 2009 - with top European coach Gary Alliss on hand to offer tips and advice to contestants.

Three years ago, Ed was playing to a twelve handicap. Now he's playing to a five. He puts his improvement down to focusing on his long game: "I worked hard at being a big hitter and getting myself more consistent off the tee. This has made a big difference because I get close to the greens a lot of the time now."

He also puts his improvement down to playing a lot more competitive golf. "Playing with the Sherborne Pilgrims, which are the old boys from Sherborne School, which I attended, has helped me hone up my game enormously," he says. "The fact is, unless you get your handicap low enough, you simply won't get invited to play with the Pilgrims, who are incredibly experienced players. So it's a massive incentive to work hard on your game."

But finding time to work on his game has not been easy for Ed, what with being newly married.

"Well, it's true that marriage and golf don't quite go hand in hand, but fortunately I've managed to keep a balance. It's not been easy, but I haven't been thrown out of the house yet!"
