On September 23rd 2008, Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Police, in association with Vocal Ltd, are holding a free event at the Banqueting Suite of Leeds Civic Hall to promote awareness of the newly upgraded ‘Leeds Alert’ Scheme for businesses within the city centre.

The Leeds Alert Scheme allows business subscribers to receive vital information direct from the Police in the event of emergency incidents such as terrorism, flooding, gas explosions, severe weather, protest demonstrations or incidents affecting the transport network. Leeds Alert subscribers can receive the message via a variety of methods including SMS mobile text messaging or email. To date the scheme has used inform to businesses of a large number of incidents including potential flooding in January 2008, a gas explosion outside St James Hospital in April 2008 and a fatal road traffic accident on the city centre loop road in July 2008.

The event, to be held from 9:30am until midday on 23rd September, will promote the importance of Emergency Planning and Business Continuity within Leeds City Centre and there will be guest speakers including representatives from West Yorkshire Police, Leeds City Council’s Peace and Emergency Planning Unit, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Vocal Communications Ltd; the providers of the Leeds Alert Scheme. Vocal will specifically outline the improvements to the Leeds Alert scheme.

Roger Carter, Principal Emergency Planning Officer at Leeds City Council said:
