According to the report, traditionally, conventional mechanical keys were used to lock or unlock vehicle doors. The major causes of vehicle theft stemmed from the fact that mechanical keys were stolen or left inside the vehicle by mistake. The advent of electronic keyless entry systems changed this scenario drastically because vehicle access is now linked to electromagnetic frequency and communication wavelengths. The adoption of keyless entry systems helped to drastically reduce the number of vehicle thefts. NFC plays a pivotal role in the development of keyless entry systems. The feature also offers significant convenience when multiple users use the same car during different times, especially for non-personal or commercial use. Managing commercial fleets when drivers operate in shifts needs the use of multiple keys, which may potentially be lost due to mishandling. However, access control through NFC-enabled mobile phones and NFC-enabled door unlock/lock systems can offer significant convenience to drivers and fleet managers. As per the need, fleet managers can transfer the vehicle key through mobile phones and the accessibility of the keys from fleet managers to drivers becomes faster, safer, and convenient.

Further, the report states that although OEMs and suppliers have developed technologies to prevent this kind of hacking, a completely foolproof system has yet not been developed. One such development is the rolling code system, which generates different codes every time the fob key is used to secure the vehicle. This means that a unique code for every single use makes it difficult to hack and replicate the entry system. However, experts have observed that black market devices (such as RollJam) can defeat this system by blocking the first signal and recording the second signal, i.e., a driver trying to unlock the car sends the first signal (which is blocked by RollJam), forcing the driver to retry by sending a second signal. Now RollJam releases the first signal to unlock while recording the second signal. This technique helps the miscreant to unlock and gain unauthorized access to the vehicle.
