MOSI displays Sunworks art exhibit
On Saturday, July 12, 2008 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. guests can enjoy daytime solar viewings courtesy of the NASA Soho Project. A NASA liaison will set up telescopes and allow guests to view the sun in action as well as provide a demonstration on UV Rays. During that evening, guests can also join MOSI for SkyWatch from 8 - 10 p.m. and receive solar-related giveaways—while supplies last. SkyWatch is FREE and open to the public (weather-permitting).
Sunworks is a NASA Soho project—based out of Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD—and is collection of original artworks by artists ranging from 4th grade children to adults. Soho is an Earth orbiting solar observation spacecraft studying the Sun 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, and was featured in an IMAX® film, SolarMax.
Two years ago, NASA’s Soho project sponsored an art contest celebrating the project’s 10th anniversary where more than 500 submissions were received. Following the art contest, the Soho project, along with the United Nations’ International Heliophysical Year (IHY) program based in Vienna, Austria, decided to showcase the artworks by selecting twenty-four to tour as part of the UN’s IHY 2007-09 celebration to demonstrate to the public the relevance of studying the Sun.
An artist based in the Orlando area—Dr. Elizabeth Harris—will also display her quilt artwork in the Sunworks display at MOSI. Dr. Harris is a biology instructor at the University of Central Florida, Orlando, and is a highly skilled quilt artist. She has three award winning art pieces in Sunworks titled: Black Sun of Medea; Transit of Venus, and Seven Suns.
The artworks are wildly creative and diverse, ranging from designs done in molten glass, stained glass, mixed media, a plaster of paris mold, oils, crayon, yarn, even lego blocks. Artists from the United States, European countries, South America, and even from down under, Australia are represented. Sunworks recently concluded its display at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center’s Spaceport USA Visitor Center’s Imax Art gallery. For more information on the Sunworks exhibit, please call Jim Stryder, NASA liasion at (954) 577-6181 or (954) 577-0462.
