Dam Defenders roof and gutter heat cable installation in Greater Cleveland

The Cleveland-based company runs self-regulating heat cable through gutters and downspouts, offers free on-site assessments and states most homes are installed in one day.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Dam Defenders, a roof and gutter heat cable company based in Cleveland, is installing self-regulating heat cable systems for homeowners throughout Greater Cleveland to stop ice dams at the roof edge. The company states it is licensed and insured and offers a 10-year cable warranty and a 5-year labor guarantee.

According to the company, ice dams form when snow on the roof, heat leaking from the attic and an eave that stays below freezing occur together. Attic heat melts the snow from underneath, the meltwater refreezes at the cold overhang, and each thaw-freeze cycle adds a layer until a ridge holds standing water that backs up under the shingles. The company notes that Cleveland swings above and below freezing from December to March, and that the damage can include wet insulation, stained ceilings and gutters torn from the fascia.

Rather than installing roof-only cable, which the company says moves the dam into the gutter, Dam Defenders designs the full drainage path for each roof: eave, valleys, dormers, gutters and downspouts. One pass of cable runs along the bottom of the gutter and a return pass runs inside the gutter guard, so the gutter becomes a heater that melts the shingles above it. Cable continues down inside each downspout to the ground, and a sensor turns the system on when conditions are cold and wet. Where a roof needs more coverage, the company uses manufacturer clips with no nails through the roof.

The company states that its self-regulating cable increases output as temperatures fall and reduces it as they rise, foot by foot, runs only when it is below freezing and wet, and is UL-listed cable on a dedicated GFCI circuit the company wires itself. By contrast, according to Dam Defenders, hardware-store heat tape delivers the same output at 30 degrees and at minus 10 degrees, covers the roof edge only and relies on a switch.

Dam Defenders also states that heat cable is not the right answer for every home. According to the company, homeowners with an open, insulated and air-sealed attic, a simple gable roof and no history of icicles are better served spending the money on the attic. It describes cable as the practical fix for finished third floors and cathedral ceilings, Tudors and capes with valleys and dormers, deep north-facing overhangs, and slate and metal roofs that cannot be easily retrofitted.

The process begins with a free on-site assessment to measure eaves, gutters and downspouts, review the previous winter's trouble spots and check where power is available. Homeowners then receive three written options covering good, better and best. The company states that installation takes one day on most homes and that the circuit is included.

The service area covers Greater Cleveland, about 30 miles from downtown, including Cleveland, Lakewood, Parma, Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights, Strongsville, Westlake, Rocky River, Mentor, Solon, Avon, Bay Village, Berea, Broadview Heights, North Olmsted and Euclid. The company states that September through November is install season and cable stock runs short by December. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 7 AM to 7 PM, with Sunday for emergencies only. Free estimates are available by phone or through the company's website.

Best Self-Regulating Heated Gutter Cable Systems for Cleveland Homes
Best Self-Regulating Heated Gutter Cable Systems for Cleveland Homes
Cleveland winters are hard on roofs. Lake Erie throws lake-effect snow at the eastern suburbs for months, and the freeze-thaw cycle that follows builds ice dams by melting snow during the day and refreezing it overnight. A self-regulating heated cable system addresses that water once it starts moving, instead of after it backs up under your shingles. We checked every Greater Cleveland installer we could find against BBB, Google, and…
