A Lucid Dreaming Device That Gets Better on Your Nightstand

lucidcode today released over-the-air firmware updates for the INSPEC lucid dreaming device. When a new version is available, the free Lucid Scribe app shows a notification on the INSPEC screen. One tap sends the firmware to the device over Bluetooth. A full firmware transfers in about two minutes, and the INSPEC restarts on the new version.

The INSPEC is a bedside infrared camera that watches the sleeper's face, identifies the rapid eye movements of REM sleep, and fires light and audio cues while the dream is happening. Its detection runs on the device itself. Until now, every improvement to it meant a USB cable, a desktop tool, and a manual firmware flash.

The new firmware changes what the camera looks at and what it counts as an eye movement:

- Each eye is tracked separately, using face landmark detection to place a square over each eyelid. Pillow edges and hair no longer fall inside the measured area.
- Each eye is compared with how it looked a quarter of a second earlier. During testing this roughly doubled the detection of small eye movements under closed lids.
- Eye movements must arrive in bursts to count. Breathing moves the face in a slow, regular rhythm, and the burst rule filters it out.
- A slow rocking of the head shifts the whole eye image at once. The device now measures that shift and ignores it.
- Face detections with implausible eye spacing are skipped, such as folds in the pillow or colorful blanket covers mistaken for a face.

The app release also adds Share Video to the INSPEC session screen. It steps through every frame the INSPEC saved during the night and records them as an MP4, with a marker moving along the night's hypnogram to show when each clip was captured. A REM period plays back as a few seconds of closed eyelids flickering. The video is created on the phone and leaves it only when shared.
