INSPEC's Camera-Based REM Detection Matches Clinical EEG Sleep Staging

lucidcode today shared the first side-by-side comparison of its INSPEC lucid dreaming device against clinical-grade EEG. In an overnight recording, the INSPEC detected REM sleep from a bedside infrared camera while a CGX Patch EEG recorded the sleeper's brain activity. When the EEG was scored by three separate sleep stage classifiers, the REM periods each classifier identified fell at the same times the INSPEC had flagged REM from the video.

The INSPEC detects REM without contact. It watches the sleeper's face under infrared light and measures the eye movements that signal dreaming. The clinical EEG measures electrical activity from the scalp. The two methods are unrelated, which is what makes the agreement between them worth reporting.

REM sleep is scored in sleep laboratories from EEG and electrooculography, where electrodes measure electrical activity from the scalp and around the eyes. The method is the clinical standard. It is also impractical at home, which is why the INSPEC was built to detect REM from a camera instead.

The first pass was a visual check. The INSPEC logged a 20-minute run of eye movements at a point where the raw EEG also showed clear REM activity. The eye movement periods and the EEG spikes lined up.

The second pass ran the EEG through sleep stage classifiers. lucidcode scored the CGX recording with three independent models: ez6 and ez6moe from ezscore, and DreamentoScorer from Dreamento. All three produced a hypnogram of the night with REM periods marked. Across all three, the REM marks fell at the same times the INSPEC had detected REM from the camera. The long REM periods late in the night, around hours three, five, and seven, appeared consistently in every classifier and matched the camera.

This is a single night from one sleeper, not a validation study. The three classifiers were trained on data from the ZMax headband, so applied to CGX recordings they flipped between adjacent stages more often than they would on their native hardware. The finding here is narrower and specific: the timing of the REM periods agreed across a contactless camera and three EEG-based scorers on the same night.

The INSPEC's REM detection is also inspectable. Rather than a single black-box output, the device records the eye movements it flags, so a reviewer can see the movements the detection is based on. The full session, including the raw EDF EEG file, is available on LSDBase for anyone who wants to score it themselves.

The INSPEC is available at https://inspec.me. The Lucid Scribe app is free on the App Store and Google Play.

The INSPEC is the first commercially available lucid dreaming device to detect REM sleep using computer vision. A bedside infrared camera monitors the sleeper's face in real time, identifies the rapid eye movements that signal dreaming, and triggers light and audio cues to promote lucid dreams when used in conjunction with cognitive training. The INSPEC requires no electrodes, headbands, or wearables. It connects via Bluetooth to the free Lucid Scribe app on iOS and Android. Learn more at https://inspec.me.

lucidcode is an independent developer of lucid dreaming and sleep research tools, founded by Michael Paul Coder. Its flagship desktop application, Lucid Scribe, has been used by researchers worldwide and cited in over 20 publications on Google Scholar. The desktop version of Lucid Scribe is distributed through NeuroSky's official store as a companion to their MindWave EEG headset. The company's hardware iterations have been documented by Hackaday since 2012. lucidcode is based in The Hague, Netherlands. Learn more at https://lucidcode.com.
