Monobloc Aerosol Non-BPA Coatings Market to Reach USD 7.9

Regulatory changes affecting bisphenol-based food-contact materials and demand for coatings that protect metal packaging are creating new qualification requirements for coating suppliers, according to Fact.MR.

NEWARK, Del., October 12, 2026. The global monobloc aerosol non-BPA coatings market is projected to increase from USD 4.346 billion in 2026 to USD 7.8568 billion by 2036, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.1%, according to Fact.MR. The market is expected to generate an incremental opportunity of USD 3.5108 billion over the forecast period as packaging manufacturers evaluate alternatives to BPA-based internal coatings for metal cans, monobloc aerosols and aluminum tubes.

The transition involves more than changing coating chemistry. Packaging manufacturers must verify corrosion resistance, product compatibility, coating flexibility and performance on existing production lines. These requirements are influencing supplier selection and the time needed to qualify replacement coatings.

Regulatory changes put coating qualification in focus

European food-contact requirements are an important consideration for packaging companies reviewing bisphenol-based coatings. The European Commission published its Note for Guidance on the implementation of Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/3190 on the use of bisphenol A (BPA) and other bisphenols and bisphenol derivatives with harmonised classification for specific hazardous properties in certain materials and articles intended to come into contact with food on December 17, 2025.

Fact.MR reports that the transition date for many single-use food-contact products, including coated metal cans, was set for July 20, 2026. The regulatory transition increases the importance of evaluating suitable replacement systems, documenting performance and confirming compliance for the intended packaging application.

At the same time, coating changes can affect curing conditions, production speed and package performance. Manufacturers therefore need to balance compliance requirements with operational feasibility when moving to non-BPA formulations.

Where growth is fastest

Country-level forecasts show the strongest projected growth in the USA and China, while France and Germany provide European market perspectives.

USA: The market is forecast to expand at a 7.1% CAGR through 2036. Demand is supported by applications spanning aerosol, beverage, food and personal care packaging, where coatings must protect metal and remain compatible with established production lines.
China: Growth is projected at a 6.9% CAGR. Large-scale beverage and personal care packaging production supports demand for coatings that can be applied consistently on high-volume manufacturing lines.
Japan: The market is expected to register a 5.8% CAGR. Quality requirements for aerosol and specialty metal packaging support the need for consistent internal coating performance.
France: Demand is forecast to rise at a 5.4% CAGR. The country's aerosol and personal care packaging activity, together with European food-contact requirements, influences coating selection.
Germany: The market is projected to grow at a 5.2% CAGR. Manufacturers must balance coating compliance and package performance with production-line requirements.
What leads the market

Fact.MR identifies four leading categories across coating chemistry, package type, coating position and performance.

Coating chemistry: Polyester is projected to account for 34.0% of the market in 2026. Its adhesion to metal, flexibility and corrosion-protection properties support its use in non-BPA coating systems.
Package type: Beverage cans are expected to represent 31.0% of the market in 2026. Their high-volume production and need for internal protection against beverage contact support demand.
Coating position: Internal lining is projected to hold a 36.0% share in 2026. It separates the packaged product from the metal surface during storage.
Performance: Corrosion resistance is expected to account for 29.0% of the market in 2026. Coatings must protect metal surfaces while remaining compatible with the products they contain.
These shares reflect different segmentation dimensions and should not be added together.

The hurdle: Qualification takes time

The principal restraint is the time required to qualify replacement coatings. A formulation that performs well in one package may require additional testing for another product because chemical compatibility, forming requirements and curing conditions vary.

Fact.MR identifies long qualification cycles as a restraint with an estimated negative 0.8-percentage-point impact on CAGR. Performance trade-offs across packaged products carry a negative 0.6-percentage-point impact, while curing and production-line conversion constraints carry a negative 0.4-percentage-point impact.

These challenges make application-specific testing and technical support important considerations for packaging manufacturers. Replacement coatings must satisfy the needs of the packaged product without creating unacceptable changes to manufacturing operations.

Recent developments and companies profiled

Supplier activity illustrates how coating providers are expanding their non-BPA offerings and investing in metal-packaging applications.

February 3, 2025: PPG announced the launch of its non-BPA PPG HOBA coatings for aluminum bottles at Paris Packaging Week. The company's HOBA range also serves monobloc aerosols, collapsible tubes and aluminum bottles.
May 2025: AkzoNobel reported that its Accelshield 300 coating had a 27% lower carbon footprint than early epoxy-based coatings. The company also reported a planned €32 million investment in its Vilafranca plant for bisphenol-free metal-packaging coatings, with full operation planned by mid-2025.
July 21, 2025: PPG announced additions to its BPA-NI beverage-can-end coating range through its PPG INNOVEL and PPG iSENSE series. The report also describes a low-film-weight coating system associated with a potential 20% reduction in carbon emissions.
Fact.MR profiles four key companies in this market: PPG Industries, AkzoNobel, Sherwin-Williams and ACTEGA. Their coating portfolios serve different metal-packaging applications, with product selection depending on the package format, required performance and manufacturing conditions.

Analyst perspective

Shambhu Nath Jha, Principal Consultant at Fact.MR, states:

"Packaging companies need coatings that protect the metal, stay strong during shaping, and work on existing production lines. Suppliers that provide clear test results, safety records, and production support are expected to see higher demand."

What this means for packaging manufacturers and coating buyers

Evaluate coatings against the intended application. Compare corrosion resistance, flexibility, product compatibility and migration-related test results for the specific package and contents. Performance in one application should not be assumed to transfer to another.
Plan qualification before changing production lines. Review curing requirements, oven settings, coating application and production speed before committing to a replacement formulation. Early testing can help identify operational constraints before a wider conversion.
Prioritize evidence and technical support. Ask suppliers for relevant test documentation, product-specific performance data and production support. For manufacturers serving regulated markets, confirm the applicable requirements and transition provisions for each packaging use.
