Momentive Performance Materials solutions deliver improved performance and increased productivity with Silicone RTV adhesives for demanding automotive headlamp designs

As designers push the boundaries of vehicle styling, and technology drives improved performance and the reduced size of headlamps, the demands on key materials such as adhesives is increased.

Momentive Performance Materials is responding to this emerging challenge with a newly developed RTV210A/22XB series, comprising a 2-component silicone RTV adhesive that can meet the demanding headlamp requirements whilst enabling high speed production and improved productivity, thanks to its very fast room temperature cure technology and consistent application. The RTV210A/22XB series is one of the fastest room temperature cure silicone adhesive systems for headlamps enabling leakage testing shortly after assembly.

Automotive headlamps are a key component for the designer; they determine the face of the car, giving it individual character and identity. Low, sleek lines contribute to reduced drag and improved aerodynamics, reducing fuel consumption. Lighting is also a critical safety item and constantly increasing demands on performance need to be incorporated into more complex and compact packages, increasing constant use temperatures normally seen in smaller high performance fog lamp applications.

Headlamps not only have to cope with increased internal temperatures but must also operate in a wide range of harsh environments such as high and low ambient temperatures and humidity levels as well as impacts from stones and minor parking incidents.

Silicone RTV’s provide a comprehensive solution providing adhesion to both the lamp body and the coated lens, at the same time giving a long term level of elasticity that can cope with CLTE differentials over the wide range of operating temperatures. Momentive Performance Materials also offers a broad portfolio of RTV technologies for LED’s including encapsulants, die-attach and lens materials.
