Roundabouts in the Fox Valley: What Crash Data Shows

Press release from: ABNewswire

Wisconsin, United States - 29 September, 2026 - Over the past two decades, roundabouts have become a familiar part of the landscape in northeast Wisconsin. Drivers in Appleton, Grand Chute, Kaukauna, De Pere and across the Fox Valley now navigate circular intersections that were once rare in the Midwest. Wisconsin has built more roundabouts than most states, and the Fox Valley has been one of the areas leading that trend.

Traffic engineers say the results are clear: roundabouts dramatically reduce serious crashes. But many drivers still find them confusing, and certain types of minor crashes remain common.

Why Roundabouts Are Safer

Roundabouts change how vehicles interact at intersections. Instead of crossing paths at high speeds, drivers enter a circle, travel in one direction and exit at lower speeds.

Studies by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and federal highway officials have found that converting traditional intersections to roundabouts can reduce injury crashes by roughly three-quarters and fatal crashes by as much as 90%. The main reason is that roundabouts nearly eliminate the most dangerous types of collisions: head-on crashes and high-speed right-angle, or T-bone, collisions.

Lower speeds also mean that when crashes do occur, they are usually less severe. Roundabouts can also keep traffic moving more smoothly than signals, reducing the stop-and-go conditions that often lead to rear-end collisions at traditional intersections.

The Crashes That Still Happen

Although roundabouts reduce serious injuries, they do not eliminate crashes. The most common types include:

* Failure to yield at entry: Drivers entering the roundabout must yield to traffic already in the circle. Many collisions happen when a driver pulls in without waiting for a gap.
* Sideswipes in multilane roundabouts: In two-lane roundabouts, drivers sometimes change lanes inside the circle or exit from the wrong lane, clipping vehicles beside them.
* Rear-end collisions at entry: A driver may begin to enter, then stop suddenly, and the vehicle behind does not react in time.
* Single-vehicle crashes: Drivers who approach too fast may strike the central island or curbs, especially at night or in winter weather.

Multilane roundabouts tend to produce more of these minor crashes than single-lane designs, largely because they require drivers to choose the correct lane before entering. Local officials have responded with signs, pavement markings and public education campaigns, including videos showing drivers how to use specific intersections.

Pedestrians and Cyclists

Roundabouts can be safer for pedestrians because crossing distances are shorter and vehicle speeds are lower. Crosswalks are typically set back from the circle, and splitter islands allow people to cross one direction of traffic at a time.

Still, pedestrians and cyclists need drivers to watch for them at both entry and exit points. Drivers leaving the roundabout are sometimes focused on traffic rather than the crosswalk just ahead.

Tips for Navigating Roundabouts

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation offers guidance for drivers:

* Slow down as you approach and watch for signs showing which lane to use.
* Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and to traffic already in the roundabout.
* Enter when there is a safe gap, then travel counterclockwise without stopping.
* Do not change lanes inside a multilane roundabout.
* Signal your exit and watch for pedestrians as you leave.
* Give large trucks extra room. They may need to use more than one lane.

Winter Adds Complications

Northeast Wisconsin winters bring snow, ice and reduced visibility, which can make lane markings difficult to see. Drivers should reduce speed even further in winter conditions and allow more time to judge gaps in traffic.

Snowbanks on the central island or approach can also block sightlines, making careful scanning essential. Plows and salt trucks may also be working in and around the circle, and drivers should give them plenty of room.

Fault and Legal Questions

When crashes happen in roundabouts, determining fault often depends on who had the right of way and whether each driver used the correct lane. Drivers entering the circle generally must yield to vehicles already inside it.

Wisconsin follows a modified comparative negligence system. A person can recover damages if they are not more at fault than the other party, with any award reduced by their share of responsibility. In disputed roundabout crashes, dashcam video, witness statements and photos of lane markings and signage can play a major role.

People injured in these crashes sometimes consult car crash attorneys in Appleton [https://www.sigmanlegal.com/areas/appleton/car-accident-lawyer/] to help sort out fault and deal with insurers. Wisconsin generally allows three years to file a personal injury claim after a car crash.

A Long-Term Shift

Supporters say that roundabouts represent one of the most effective safety improvements in modern traffic engineering. Critics argue that some designs, particularly multilane roundabouts, remain confusing and that driver education has not kept pace.

For now, roundabouts are here to stay in the Fox Valley. Safety advocates say that the best way to make them work is simple: slow down, yield and choose your lane before you enter.
