Byron Cherry Goes VIP on US Actors

Byron Wight Cherry was born April 17, 1955, in Atlanta and graduated from North Side High School. A scholarship took him to East Tennessee State University, where he played running back with his brother Nat. After college he earned a black belt in karate. Before the series that defined his public name, he worked as a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines. He had already auditioned for Bo Duke in 1978 alongside longtime friend John Schneider; Schneider got the part. When Schneider and Tom Wopat left the show in a 1982 merchandising dispute, Warner Bros. brought Cherry in as cousin Coy Duke and Christopher Mayer as Vance. Cherry appeared in the first 19 episodes of season five (1982-1983). Ratings dipped; the original Dukes returned. Cherry still voiced Coy in 13 episodes of the 1983 animated series The Dukes and remains a fixture at fan events, including signing parts on replica General Lees.

Warner Bros. kept him under a multi-year contract. Guest work followed: Deputy Will Roxie on Murder, She Wrote ("It's a Dog's Life," 1984), Esty in the crime feature The Fix (1985), Janner on Vietnam War Story, Charlie Hobbs on In the Heat of the Night ("The Pig Woman of Sparta," 1989), and a newlywed in Blood Salvage (1990, also released as Mad Jake). He appeared on Battle of the Network Stars and was a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. He later ran a bar in Ventura, California. He has been married to Krista Laurie McLeod since 1995.

He returned to the camera in the 2010s and 2020s: Miles Dennehy on 3rd Eye (2018), Cousin Coy in Christmas Cars (2019), himself in Stand on It! (2020), a game warden in Go Fishin' (2020), Coy Duke again in a 2021 feature, Deputy Bubba Bradford in Salvage Yard Shine Boys and Redemption: Salvage Yard Shine Boys, Mayor Pompey in Midnight Massacre (2025)-which he also executive-produced and co-directed-and Roy in the short The Not So Great Outdoorsmen (2026).
