The free haunted house opens on two nights for the first time - new story for 2026: "Grimm's Nightmare"

On the last weekend of October, the Klaeffling family's home in Boostedt will transform for the eighth time into "vb30 - Das Halloween Haus" (The Halloween House).

New this year: While the walk-through has so far only been open for a single night, vb30 will open its doors on two consecutive nights for the first time in 2026. Admission stays what it has been from the very beginning: free.

A Dictionary, a Dead Brother, and the Wrong Word

The frame story of this year's horror tale, "Grimm's Nightmare," doesn't begin in the forest but in a Berlin study in the year 1863. There, Jacob Grimm is working on the final entries of his dictionary, years after the death of his brother Wilhelm. Ever since, nightmares have haunted him: night after night, the same beasts, the same blood. His last entry, written shortly before he himself died under mysterious circumstances, was supposed to be "Frucht," the German word for "fruit." Instead, it became "Furcht" - "fear." Before his death, he had secretly printed a second, darker edition of the fairy tales, written from the images in his dreams. Anyone who finds this book in an old antiquarian bookshop today and starts reading will never sleep peacefully again.

That is the invitation vb30 uses to lure its visitors across the threshold this year: Your fairy tales aren't what you think they are.

Seven Fairy Tales, One Walk-Through, No Way Out

At the entrance, the Pied Piper of Hamelin is waiting with his flute. What follows leads through seven scenes, each built on a well-known Grimm fairy tale and each hiding a second, much darker truth. Which fairy tales turn into true horror in "Grimm's Nightmare" remains a secret for now. But you can bet you'll run into a girl dressed in red, along with a few miners and their gruesome secret...

Lighting, sound, homemade animatronics, scents, and a team of numerous live scare actors work together so well that vb30 can hold its own against large commercial haunted attractions - even though the project is run by just one family and around 20 volunteers.

"It's fun for all of us to tell a new story every year. That's exciting for us - and thrilling for the brave souls who dare to visit us every year," Oliver Klaeffling explains with a wink.

What makes his Halloween house so special to him? "When there's screaming inside and laughing outside, all the effort has paid off," says the Boostedt local.

Why One Night Became Two

It all started in 2019 with a pumpkin garland and two small hanging ghosts in the front yard. Today, the family stores more than 50 cubic meters of decorations in a specially rented storage space. Setup, teardown, and preparation add up to more than 1,000 hours of work every year.

Because visitor numbers have grown steadily over the years, vb30 will open its doors on two consecutive nights for the first time in 2026.

On Friday, October 30, and Saturday, October 31, "Grimm's Nightmare" welcomes visitors from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. each night. The walk-through is recommended for ages 12 and up.

For families with younger children, the "Grusel-Wusel-Nacht" returns as a parallel offering: a separate little zone without blood or jump scares.

Visitors should plan about half an hour for their visit. Free timeslots can be reserved on the website until October 27, allowing guests to skip the line.

Admission is free. There will also be candy, scratch-off tickets, and a costume contest.

vb30 is a volunteer-run, private Halloween event hosted by the Klaeffling family in Boostedt near Neumuenster, Germany.
