Orisha University offers online Certificate, Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programs in Ifá and Orisha Studies for $99/month. Study

September 8, 2026 - The Ibeji are the sixteenth of the 16 principal Orishas studied in the Bachelor of Sacred Sciences at Orisha University (OrishaUniversity.com) - the divine twins, Orishas of childhood, joy, abundance, duality, and the miraculous, and the closing lesson of the university's Orisha Studies curriculum. This release is part 16 of a sixteen-part series by Orisha University founder Ajarn Shaman Shu (Robert S. Shumake, PhD) that introduces each of the principal Orishas, along with their attributes, sacred symbols, and living lessons.
In Yoruba spiritual philosophy, the Orishas are the divine forces through which Olodumare, the Supreme Being, shapes creation, nature, consciousness, and community. They are not distant abstractions. Each Orisha represents a living spiritual principle and a pathway of character, responsibility, and transformation that a human being can study, honor, and grow into.
A note on variation: colors, numbers, offerings, and stories differ across Yoruba, Lucumí, Santería, Candomblé, and diaspora lineages. What follows reflects widely shared associations rather than the rulings of any single house. Serious students should study under qualified elders in a living community.
Who the Ibeji Are
The Ibeji are the sacred twins. Among the Yoruba, who have one of the highest twin birth rates in the world, twins are regarded as blessings from heaven, capable of bringing wealth and protection to their family. Taiwo, the first-born, is said to have been sent by Kehinde, the second, to test whether the world was good - a story that reverses the usual order of seniority and teaches that appearances deceive.
The Ibeji embody the union of opposites - two who are one - and the playful, unguarded spirit that adults are called to remember. Their carved figures, the ere ibeji, are among the most recognized works of Yoruba art, made to honor a twin who has died so that the surviving twin and the family remain whole.
Titles: Ibeji (Twins), Taiwo (First to Taste the World) and Kehinde (Second to Arrive), Ejire (Two Who Are One)
Role: Orishas of twins, children, joy, play, abundance, and protection of the family; embodiment of duality and balance
Relationship to Shango and Oshun: In some narratives the Ibeji are children of Shango and Oshun or of Shango and Oya; accounts vary
Relationship to the family: Twins bring prosperity to the household that honors them and misfortune to the one that neglects them
Sacred Associations
Domain: Children, twins, joy, play, abundance, protection of the family, duality, balance
Colors: Red and blue (red and white in some houses)
Sacred objects: The ere ibeji (carved twin figures), sweets, small toys, beans and fruit, drums
Number: 2 (4 in some lineages)
Sacred practice: Families with twins honor them with feasts and gifts; the ere ibeji are fed, dressed, and cared for as living children
Diaspora names: Ibeyi or Jimaguas (Lucumi/Santeria), Ibeji or Eres (Candomble)
Joy Is Sacred
The Ibeji are the last Orishas in the curriculum because they are the reminder that spiritual life is not only discipline and sacrifice. Blessing often arrives in pairs. Balance is found in embracing opposites. And the spirit of a child - unguarded, playful, delighted by small things - is a doorway to abundance that the serious adult too often closes.
Orisha University studies the Ibeji as the Orishas of joy, family, and the miraculous. Their story of Taiwo and Kehinde, in which the younger sends the elder ahead, teaches students to hold contradictions lightly and to trust that what looks like two may in truth be one.
Core Lesson
Joy is sacred. The Ibeji teach that blessing often arrives in pairs, that balance is found in embracing opposites, and that the spirit of a child is a doorway to abundance. Their way is playful, mischievous, joyful, and deeply protective.
"We end the sixteen with the Ibeji on purpose. After Orunmila's wisdom and Shango's justice and Oya's storms, the twins remind every student that the whole point was joy, family, and abundance all along."
- Robert S. Shumake, PhD (Ajarn Shaman Shu), Founder and Chancellor, Orisha University
(Quote drafted for founder approval.)
Education Before Claims of Authority
Orisha University is explicit that a degree documents completion of an educational curriculum and does not confer priestly initiation. Titles such as Babalawo or Iyanifa involve distinct lineage, training, community, and initiatory requirements. Online learning is presented as a foundation that complements, rather than replaces, living communities, elders, and appropriate initiation.
Study From Anywhere
Structured Ifá education has historically been difficult to find outside a handful of communities. Orisha University's online format allows students in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, and Jacksonville - and anywhere else in the world - to access lessons from home, review material more than once, complete assessments, track academic progress, and connect their studies to a broader spiritual community without relocating to Nigeria, the Caribbean, or another city.

1. Who are the Ibeji?
The Ibeji are the divine twins, Orishas of children, joy, abundance, duality, and family protection.
2. What does the name Ibeji mean?

3. What alternative names are used for the Ibeji?
Ibeyi, Jimaguas, Eres, and Ejire, depending on the tradition.
4. Which common misconceptions about the Ibeji should be corrected?
They are not minor or childish figures; they are powerful protectors whose neglect brings misfortune and whose honor brings wealth.
Cosmology and Spiritual Meaning
5. Who are Taiwo and Kehinde?
Taiwo is the first-born twin, sent ahead by Kehinde, the second, to taste the world; Kehinde is therefore regarded as the elder.
6. Why are twins sacred to the Yoruba?
The Yoruba have one of the highest twin birth rates in the world, and twins are regarded as blessings from heaven with special spiritual power.
7. What do the ere ibeji figures represent?
Carved figures made to honor a twin who has died, cared for as a living child so that the family and surviving twin remain whole.
Destiny, Ori, and Human Purpose
8. What do the Ibeji teach about destiny?
Some destinies are shared; the Ibeji show that two lives can carry one purpose.
9. What role does joy play in the Ibeji's teaching?
Joy is not a reward at the end of spiritual work; it is a sacred practice in itself.
Character and Ethical Conduct
10. What do the Ibeji teach about family?
A family that honors its children prospers; one that neglects them declines.
11. What do the Ibeji teach about balance?
Opposites belong together; wholeness is found in holding both.
12. What warnings do the Ibeji offer about neglect?
Neglecting the twins, or the children they represent, invites misfortune on the household.

They are mischievous when ignored; their gifts require attention and care.
Divination, Guidance, and Ritual Boundaries
15. What might it mean when the Ibeji are indicated in a consultation?
Interpretations vary, but the Ibeji often signal children, family, duality, or a blessing that arrives in pairs. A qualified diviner must interpret a specific cast.
16. What offerings are traditionally associated with the Ibeji?
Public sources commonly name sweets, fruit, beans, and small toys; specific ritual instruction belongs to initiated elders.
17. Why must ritual detail be left to qualified practitioners?
Rites for the Ibeji, especially those concerning a deceased twin, are family-specific and require elder guidance.
Society and Contemporary Application
18. What can the Ibeji teach about family life today?
Honor your children, celebrate them, and remember that the home that laughs together prospers together.
19. How can the Ibeji's teachings inform how adults approach life?
By recovering the child's capacity for play, wonder, and delight in small things.
