Orisha University offers online Certificate, Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programs in Ifá and Orisha Studies for $99/month. Study

September 8, 2026 - Osoosi is the fourteenth of the 16 principal Orishas studied in the Bachelor of Sacred Sciences at Orisha University (OrishaUniversity.com) - the divine hunter, the Orisha of the forest, precision, justice, and the single intention that finds its mark. This release is part 14 of a sixteen-part series by Orisha University founder Ajarn Shaman Shu (Robert S. Shumake, PhD) that introduces each of the principal Orishas, along with their attributes, sacred symbols, and living lessons.
In Yoruba spiritual philosophy, the Orishas are the divine forces through which Olodumare, the Supreme Being, shapes creation, nature, consciousness, and community. They are not distant abstractions. Each Orisha represents a living spiritual principle and a pathway of character, responsibility, and transformation that a human being can study, honor, and grow into.
A note on variation: colors, numbers, offerings, and stories differ across Yoruba, Lucumí, Santería, Candomblé, and diaspora lineages. What follows reflects widely shared associations rather than the rulings of any single house. Serious students should study under qualified elders in a living community.
Who Osoosi Is
Osoosi, also called Oshoosi and Ochosi, is the Orisha of the hunt. His arrow never misses. He provides for the community from the forest, and as the divine tracker he governs law, courts, and the pursuit of truth - the hunter who finds what is hidden and brings the guilty to account. Together with Ogun and Esu he forms the group of "warriors" who protect the initiate.
Osoosi is quiet, observant, and swift. Where Ogun clears the path with force, Osoosi moves through the forest unseen and strikes with precision. His stories teach focus: the single intention, released with a clean heart, that flies straight to its target.
Titles: Osoosi (the Hunter), Ode (Hunter), Oba Ode (King of Hunters), Olugbon Ode (Wise Hunter)
Role: Divine hunter; provider from the forest; Orisha of justice, law, and courts; tracker of truth
Relationship to Ogun and Esu: The three warriors; Ogun clears the road, Esu opens it, Osoosi finds the target
Relationship to Osain: Osoosi hunts in the forest that Osain owns; the two are closely allied in narrative
Sacred Associations
Domain: Hunting, tracking, justice, law and courts, precision, provision, the forest, focus
Colors: Blue and yellow (blue and amber in some houses)
Sacred objects: The bow and arrow, antlers, the hunter's bag, the crossbow, three arrows, the deer
Number: 7 (3 in some lineages)
Sacred practice: Devotees seek his help in legal matters, in finding what is lost, and in achieving goals with precision
Diaspora names: Ochosi (Lucumi/Santeria), Oxossi (Candomble, where he is the patron of the Ketu nation)
Aim with Intention
Osoosi's arrow is a lesson in concentration. The hunter who scatters his attention starves; the hunter who fixes on one target eats. But Osoosi's stories add a second condition: the arrow must be released with a clean heart. In one narrative his arrow struck his own mother because it was loosed in anger, and the hunter who governs justice learned what injustice costs.
Orisha University studies Osoosi as the Orisha of goals, discipline, and integrity in the pursuit of truth. His teaching shapes how students approach law, leadership, and the focused work required to fulfill a destiny.
Core Lesson
Aim with intention. Osoosi teaches concentration, the pursuit of goals with clarity, and the truth that justice - like the arrow - must be released with a clean heart to fly straight. His way is quiet, observant, swift, and just.
"Osoosi teaches the most practical lesson in the whole tradition: pick your target, clear your heart, and release. Most of our students arrive scattered. Osoosi is how they learn to aim."
- Robert S. Shumake, PhD (Ajarn Shaman Shu), Founder and Chancellor, Orisha University
(Quote drafted for founder approval.)
Education Before Claims of Authority
Orisha University is explicit that a degree documents completion of an educational curriculum and does not confer priestly initiation. Titles such as Babalawo or Iyanifa involve distinct lineage, training, community, and initiatory requirements. Online learning is presented as a foundation that complements, rather than replaces, living communities, elders, and appropriate initiation.
Study From Anywhere
Structured Ifá education has historically been difficult to find outside a handful of communities. Orisha University's online format allows students in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, and Jacksonville - and anywhere else in the world - to access lessons from home, review material more than once, complete assessments, track academic progress, and connect their studies to a broader spiritual community without relocating to Nigeria, the Caribbean, or another city.

Frequently Asked Questions: Osoosi, Ifá, and Orisha University
These questions follow the categories used in the Orisha University study guides. Answers reflect widely shared teachings; names, narratives, and ritual practices vary among lineages, and specific ritual instruction belongs to qualified elders.
Foundations and Identity
1. Who is Osoosi?
Osoosi is the divine hunter, the Orisha of the forest, precision, provision, and justice.
2. What does the name Osoosi mean?
The name is associated with the Yoruba word for hunter; his titles Ode and Oba Ode mean "hunter" and "king of hunters."
3. What alternative names are used for Osoosi?
Oshoosi, Ochosi, Oxossi, and Ode, depending on the tradition.
4. Which common misconceptions about Osoosi should be corrected?
Osoosi is not merely a hunter of animals; he is the hunter of truth and the Orisha of law and courts.
Cosmology and Spiritual Meaning
5. Why is Osoosi one of the warriors?
With Ogun and Esu, he protects the initiate: Esu opens the road, Ogun clears it, and Osoosi finds the target.
6. What does the arrow symbolize in Osoosi's worship?
Focused intention, precision, and the swift delivery of justice.
7. What does the forest symbolize for Osoosi?
The hidden world in which truth must be tracked and provision must be found.
Destiny, Ori, and Human Purpose
8. What does Osoosi teach about destiny?
Destiny is reached by aiming at it; scattered attention never arrives.
9. What role does focus play in Osoosi's teaching?
Focus is the hunter's discipline; the single intention finds its mark.
Character and Ethical Conduct
10. What does Osoosi teach about justice?
Justice must be pursued with a clean heart; an arrow loosed in anger strikes the wrong target.
11. What does Osoosi teach about integrity?
The tracker cannot lie to the trail; integrity is the condition of finding truth.
12. What warnings does Osoosi offer about anger?
The story of the arrow that struck his mother warns that anger corrupts even the surest aim.
Blessings, Challenges, and Balance
13. Which blessings are associated with Osoosi?
Success in goals, victory in legal matters, provision, protection, and the recovery of what is lost.
14. Which cautions accompany Osoosi's blessings?
His precision can become coldness, and his justice can wound the one who invokes it dishonestly.
Divination, Guidance, and Ritual Boundaries
15. What might it mean when Osoosi is indicated in a consultation?
Interpretations vary, but Osoosi often signals legal matters, goals, hidden truths, or the need for focus. A qualified diviner must interpret a specific cast.
16. What offerings are traditionally associated with Osoosi?
Public sources commonly name game, fruits, and anise; specific ritual instruction belongs to initiated elders.
17. Why must ritual detail be left to qualified practitioners?
Ritual carries obligations and lineage variations that a general article cannot responsibly transmit.
Society and Contemporary Application
18. What can Osoosi teach about goals and productivity?
Choose one target, remove distraction, and release with full commitment.
19. How can Osoosi's teachings inform law and justice today?
Pursue truth precisely and without personal vengeance; the arrow must be clean.
20. How can Osoosi's teachings help readers who feel scattered?
By teaching that focus is a spiritual discipline and that a single clear intention accomplishes more than a hundred divided ones.
