There is a moment on nearly every track of Dive where the groove locks in so completely that everything else falls away. No posturing, no digital gloss, no attempt to sound like anything other than exactly what it is: a band in a room, playing together, trusting the feel. That is not an accident. For Leandro "Leo" Albertoni, the singer, songwriter, keyboardist, producer, and creative director behind Denver psych-funk project San Leandro, it is the whole point.

"Dive," San Leandro's debut full-length album, arrives September 18 on Color Red Records, the Denver label founded by Eddie Roberts of The New Mastersounds. Fans can pre-order the album now at https://color-red.com/products/pre-order-san-leandro-dive or https://sanleandro.bandcamp.com/album/dive. The record follows two acclaimed singles, "Receive" and the recently released "Fractures," and arrives ahead of a California tour that takes the band to San Francisco's Boom Boom Room on September 11 and San Diego's The Holding Company on September 17, the eve of the album's release. Albertoni just released a brand-new single "I Won't Give In" (https://open.spotify.com/album/2gpwmHKfVZFmZmD10AUpBM) on September 4, 2026.

"I write, produce, and perform music under the name San Leandro. At its core, it's a project built around songs, groove, and atmosphere," says Albertoni. "I grew up playing by ear and learned music from being around other musicians, especially in blues and R&B settings, so I've always been drawn to music that feels lived-in rather than overly polished."

Eight songs long and rooted in the warmth and beautiful imperfection of classic 1970s recordings, "Dive" is an album about renewal, illusion, vulnerability, self-discovery, and the ongoing search for personal conviction. Albertoni built it the old-fashioned way, gathering a tight group of musicians in a single room and letting the chemistry breathe. Guitarists Joe Gallo and Jake Riley bring distinctive playing to the record, anchored by powerhouse drummer Everett Sutton. Renowned session drummer AJ Hall, known for his extensive touring with Jon Cleary, lends his pocket to two tracks, while original San Leandro bassist Darian Woller lays down the album's low-end. The finished record was mixed and mastered by Noam Wallenberg, whose credits include Vulfpeck. The current live touring lineup features bassist Murphy Smith, who joins Sutton to lock in the rhythm section on the road.

"I love the sound of musicians playing together in the same room," Albertoni says. "Those imperfections are what make records feel alive."

San Leandro's album has rock solid grooves and swinging vocals. It is full of soul, with expert musicianship and a tasteful range of styles. The hip lyrics are an even match for the musical sophistication. ~ Vince DiFiore, founding member of platinum-selling rock band Cake

The path to "Dive" runs through Chicago blues rooms, late-night jam sessions, and years of sideman work alongside some of the most respected musicians in American roots and funk. Albertoni grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, learning entirely by ear, sitting in at local blues jams on Hammond organ and electric piano before turning professional without setting foot in a music school. His real education came from the bandstand. He moved to Chicago, immersed himself in the city's blues community, toured with Toronzo Cannon, performed alongside Buddy Guy and The Chicago Way at the Chicago Blues Festival, and recorded and co-produced original music with Neal Francis. He went on to perform with Andy Frasco, Paul Nelson, and Damon Wood of James Brown's band, produce tracks for former Orgone vocalist Adryon de Leon, and record with Extra Gold alongside producer and engineer Mark Anderson, known for his acclaimed work with Nathaniel Rateliff. He also worked with Eddie Roberts directly as a music producer for Color Red's YouTube music library.

Every one of those collaborations left a mark. "I think every one of those artists approaches music differently, but they all taught me the importance of authenticity," Albertoni says, "Spending years touring and recording with musicians like that gave me the confidence to stop trying to sound like anyone else and finally make the record I wanted to make it."

The single, "Fractures" released August 14, captures that confidence in full. Rooted in West Coast R&B, soul, psych-funk, and blues, the song layers lush chord progressions over an intricate groove, with a sonic sensibility that nods toward Steely Dan and Toto while remaining entirely its own. Lyrically it explores the erosion of trust and the slow fracturing of a bond between two people. The main guitar riff arrived unexpectedly while Albertoni was doing laundry in 2025. He ran to his guitar before the idea could disappear and developed the rest of the song on piano the same night. Listen to "Fractures" here: https://open.spotify.com/album/5FGLqkalHknrzDHjFHeYwQ

That kind of spontaneous honesty runs through everything on "Dive." Albertoni moved to Denver in 2023 and found a creative community deeply invested in groove, improvisation, funk, jazz, and psychedelia. Chicago gave him his musical foundation. Denver gave him the room and the collaborators to expand it into something that could only be called his own.

"The older I get, the less interested I am in impressing people and the more interested I am in making music that feels true," Albertoni says. "If a song can help someone feel a little less alone, that is usually enough for me."

"Dive" is available for pre-order now. The album releases September 18 on Color Red Music via major streaming platforms.

"San Leandro is really my way of bringing together everything I love: vintage keyboards, soulful rhythm sections, introspective songwriting, and the feeling of a band as one, together in a room."
