1918: An italian Novel of War, Memory and Human Resilience
"1918", the new historical novel by Italian author Francesco Bianchi, offers a broad and immersive portrait of World War I, focusing on the everyday humanity that survived beneath the weight of one of the most dramatic moments in European history. Through a carefully woven narrative, the novel follows the intertwined paths of two young soldiers and three Red Cross nurses, whose experiences illuminate the emotional, social and moral complexity of the final phase of the Great War.Boghe, one of the two protagonists, approaches the conflict with a sense of discipline and determination, shaped by the military environment in which he has grown. Ghigo, by contrast, carries within himself the hope of a peaceful future and the desire to return to the woman he loves. Their perspectives, so different yet equally sincere, allow the reader to enter the war from two distinct angles: one marked by duty and structure, the other by longing and vulnerability.
Their journey intersects with that of three nurses - Carola, Luisa and Theresia - who work in an improvised field hospital where the daily challenges of scarcity, fatigue and responsibility create a fragile balance. The hospital becomes a microcosm of the wider conflict: a place where the arrival of very young soldiers, the constant movement of the front, and the uncertainty of each day shape the rhythm of life. Through these women, the novel explores the resilience, compassion and inner strength that often remain hidden in traditional accounts of the war.
As the story unfolds, Boghe and Ghigo face different paths shaped by the unpredictable nature of the conflict. Boghe undergoes demanding training with elite units, discovering new aspects of himself and confronting the physical and psychological limits imposed by war. Ghigo experiences the disorientation and hardship that many soldiers faced during the most turbulent phases of the Italian front. Their experiences, though distinct, echo one another in the way they reveal the human cost of the war and the profound impact it had on an entire generation.
Carola, Luisa and Theresia represent three different ways of living the war from behind the lines. Their work, marked by long hours, emotional strain and the constant need to adapt, highlights the essential role played by women in the conflict. Through their eyes, the reader encounters the daily reality of care, responsibility and silent endurance that shaped the lives of countless nurses during the Great War. The novel avoids sensationalism and instead focuses on the subtle, meaningful gestures that define their presence: the ability to listen, to comfort, to maintain dignity even in the most difficult circumstances.
Drawing inspiration from the unpublished diary of an Italian soldier captured after the battle of Caporetto, 1918 blends documentary detail with narrative sensitivity. The historical foundation enriches the story without overwhelming it, allowing the novel to remain accessible while offering depth to readers interested in the period. The diary provides a unique perspective on the Italian experience of the war, and Bianchi uses it to anchor the novel in authentic voices and real emotions.
The final chapters of 1918 explore the transition from war to peace, a moment often overlooked in historical fiction. The characters confront the challenge of imagining a future after years of upheaval, discovering how the conflict has reshaped their identities, relationships and expectations. Without revealing specific plot developments, the novel suggests that the end of the war is not simply a moment of relief, but a complex passage that requires courage, reflection and the ability to rebuild.
With its rich historical background, emotional depth and attention to human detail, 1918 stands as a novel that speaks to readers interested in memory, identity and the personal stories behind major historical events. Francesco Bianchi, known for his work on historical memory and narrative, offers a book that is both intimate and expansive, capable of resonating with a wide audience.
1918 is available, after Sept. 16th 2026, in bookstores and online.
