Why Harvard and MIT Students Still Use Investment Banking Career Coaching
New York, USA - August 24, 2026 - Students at Harvard and MIT would seem to have little need for career coaching. Many enter finance recruiting with strong grades, demanding majors, and previous internships already on their resumes. Yet those credentials do not always translate into recruiting success.Being qualified for a finance job and being prepared to recruit for one are different things. A candidate can have the academic record employers look for while still lacking firm-specific knowledge, industry expertise, networking strategy, or experience communicating an investment view under pressure.
At the end of the day, a strong resume can help get a candidate into the process, but it cannot complete the process for them.
College consultants are normal. Why do career consultants seem different?
Paying for guidance through a selective process is hardly new. College consulting has become a familiar part of the U.S. admissions landscape, including among academically strong students. But there is a clear boundary between preparation and substitution. Helping a student strengthen an essay is fundamentally different from writing it for them. The difference lies between helping someone compete more effectively versus circumventing the selection process altogether.
This distinction is even clearer in finance career coaching, particularly when the students seeking help already attend universities such as Harvard or MIT. A consultant can provide investment banking interview preparation, but cannot answer questions for the candidate. They can pressure-test a stock pitch, but the student still has to defend it in front of an investor. The same applies to networking calls, cases, and technical interviews. When the interview begins, the candidate is on their own.

Where credentials stop and preparation begins
This is the gap that One Strategy Group, or OSG, a career training firm serving students pursuing finance, consulting, quantitative finance, and technology roles, says it tries to address.
One OSG student was an MIT sophomore studying mathematics and artificial intelligence. There was little about his academic record that suggested an obvious problem. The gaps emerged elsewhere: recruiting know-how, industry knowledge, communication, and preparation for the specific roles he wanted.
Another student attended Harvard and had already completed an internship with McKinsey. His first attempt at finance recruiting produced one investment banking interview and no offer. After that recruiting cycle, he delayed graduation and joined OSG. Within six months, he received an offer from Bain Capital and two investment banks. The Harvard name and McKinsey branding were the same ones he had taken into the previous recruiting cycle. The preparation was not.
Knowing how to build a technical DCF model, for example, is different from demonstrating investment judgment. Memorizing technical questions is different from defending an investment thesis when an interviewer challenges its assumptions. And what an interviewer wants to see can vary considerably across firms and roles.
There is no single finance recruiting playbook
Investment banking interview preparation, private equity cases, and hedge fund stock pitches test different capabilities. OSG's training attempts to account for those differences rather than applying the same preparation to every finance role.
For investing roles, there may be less value in rehearsing a single "correct" stock pitch than in having the thesis challenged repeatedly from different angles. For one student pursuing public-markets investing, OSG brought in 14 experienced investors from top 3 hedge funds to critique and refine the student's pitch. The student still had to develop and defend the underlying investment argument. However, private equity required a different approach. For a student preparing for Bain Capital, OSG says the focus was on case-solving, reasoning, and the specific capabilities being evaluated in that process.

This is one area where even students at highly selective universities can run into gaps. Universities provide academic training, student organizations, and access to alumni. They are not built to provide individualized finance career training for every firm, division, and interview format. Career coaching is therefore less about changing what appears on a resume and more about what happens once an interviewer starts asking questions about it.
Preparing strong candidates to become stronger ones
Many students entering OSG already have strong academic backgrounds. The training instead focuses on technical fluency, investment judgment, communication, market knowledge, and performance under pressure. This preparation can begin months before applications open and becomes more specific as a student's target firms and roles become clearer. Students work with different mentors based on what they need to improve, with training ranging from technical and behavioral preparation to investment pitches and cases. In-person mock interviews at OSG's New York office add another layer ahead of recruiting.[f] [#cmnt6]
The process is deliberately intensive because investment judgment takes time to develop. So does the ability to communicate an idea clearly, respond when assumptions are challenged, or work through an unfamiliar problem under pressure. Those skills are built through repetition, not by reading an interview guide the night before. And their value does not disappear once recruiting ends. An internship or full-time role requires students to apply the same technical knowledge, judgment, and communication skills when there is no answer written in a guide. The expectation here is not that students work less, but that they prepare earlier and work harder once on the job. The clearest measure comes from employers themselves: 90%[g] [#cmnt7] of OSG students received return offers following their internships.
Students at highly selective universities like Harvard and MIT may already have resumes that showcase academic ability and previous experience. What those resumes cannot demonstrate on their own is whether the student is ready for the specific job they want. These credentials can open doors, but they are still only the starting point. OSG's approach is built on the idea that rigorous, individualized training prepares students to make the most of those opportunities, both during recruiting and in the roles that follow.
