The Information Gap in U.S. Investment Banking Recruiting
Newyork, USA - August 24, 2026 - There has never been more information available to students trying to break into investment banking. Interview guides cover technical concepts like valuation and accounting. Online forums track application openings and interview questions. University finance clubs pass down recruiting knowledge from one class to the next. Yet U.S. investment banking recruiting has arguably become harder to navigate as the process grows more competitive and fragmented. For years, the formula seemed relatively straightforward: a strong school, high GPA, relevant finance experience, and solid technical preparation. Put those pieces together, and Wall Street should follow. At least, that is the conventional wisdom.
But that formula leaves out a major part of the process: information. U.S. investment banking recruiting is really a web of individual firms, offices, and groups, each with different hiring needs, timelines, and interview expectations. Knowing investment banking is different from knowing how to recruit for healthcare in San Francisco, energy in Houston, or restructuring in New York.
The challenge is no longer finding recruiting advice. It is knowing which advice is current, credible, and relevant to the specific opportunity a student is pursuing.
Wall Street recruiting extends far beyond Wall Street
Geography is one reason the process is so fragmented. New York has the broadest concentration of U.S. investment banking groups and products, but not every student is, or should be, competing for the same jobs there. San Francisco has significant technology, software, and healthcare activity. Houston is closely associated with energy banking, while Chicago has a substantial industrials presence. Los Angeles has activity across media and other specialized sectors, while Boston has exposure to technology and healthcare. These differences matter because recruiting knowledge tends to follow historical placement.
Consider a student at a West Coast university who wants to recruit for a restructuring group in New York. If few students from that university have followed the same path, there may be little institutional knowledge on campus about when to begin networking, how to position the student's background, or what the group may emphasize during interviews.

Campus finance clubs have traditionally helped fill that gap by passing recruiting knowledge from one class to the next. But that knowledge often reflects where previous members have recruited. A club with a strong New York pipeline may know far less about Houston energy or San Francisco healthcare, while students outside those organizations may have even less access to that information. Two students with similar academic credentials can therefore enter finance recruiting with very different levels of knowledge about how to navigate it.[a] [#cmnt1][b] [#cmnt2]
Turning thousands of recruiting processes into data
One Strategy Group, or OSG, a career training firm serving students pursuing finance, consulting, quantitative finance, and technology roles, has built part of its model around organizing that fragmented information.

OSG says its students have accumulated more than 3,500 offers across its programs. The significance of that number is less the headline itself than the thousands of recruiting processes behind it. Each process creates another data point: a student from a particular university and background pursuing a particular firm, office, and group at a particular point in the recruiting cycle.
Consider a student at Rice University interested in healthcare investment banking. The useful questions quickly become more specific than how to break into investment banking. When should the student begin networking? Which offices should they prioritize? What industry knowledge should they develop? How have students from the same school approached similar processes?
OSG draws on those recruiting experiences and accumulated precedents when preparing later students. As the number of cases grows, the firm can compare patterns across schools, firms, geographies, and divisions rather than relying on the experience of a single student or recruiting cycle. For students pursuing less common paths, that broader pool of information can help fill gaps that may exist within their own university or immediate circle.
Historical outcomes are only part of the picture. Recruiting changes quickly, so OSG also draws on current industry professionals across firms, functions, and seniority levels, alongside students actively recruiting and former OSG students now working in finance. Together, those perspectives provide a more current view of how different firms and groups recruit as timelines and interview expectations change.
Information is useful only if a student can act on it
Knowing what an interviewer may ask is different from being able to answer it. OSG pairs its recruiting information with structured investment banking interview preparation around a student's specific gaps and target roles.
Rather than relying on a single coach, OSG uses a roughly 1:30 student-to-mentor model, with different specialists covering technical skills, industry knowledge, behavioral interviews, networking, and firm-specific preparation. Training includes repeated mock interviews and in-person simulations in OSG's New York office[c] [#cmnt3][d] [#cmnt4] designed to approximate the pressure and format of a Superday.
That can matter even for students already in established campus finance clubs. Students pursuing specialized areas such as restructuring, technology banking, or healthcare banking may need deeper training than what is passed down informally from previous classes. Students outside those clubs may need both the recruiting roadmap and the technical foundation to compete.
OSG's approach is to connect the two: use accumulated recruiting outcomes and current industry input to understand what a student needs to prepare for, then build the training around those requirements.
Making an informal system more structured
Investment banking recruiting is unlikely to become uniform. Firms, offices, and groups will continue to hire differently, while timelines and interview expectations will change. OSG's model is an attempt to make a historically informal system more structured by combining accumulated recruiting outcomes, current industry perspectives, and targeted training.
None of that makes the recruiting process easy or guarantees an offer. But it can make a process shaped by fragmented and anecdotal information more navigable, particularly for students who did not begin on the right side of the information gap.
