The Southeast Ruegen Biosphere Reserve cooperates within UNESCO's global network with biosphere reserves on islands and along coastlines, as well as within the Baltic Sea region through a separate network with biosphere reserves from Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. In the aforementioned INTERREG project, it is collaborating with 11 partners from 6 Central European countries on issues related to sustainable tourism.

The _core zone_ forms the heart of the biosphere reserve. Here, nature takes precedence: plants and animals thrive largely undisturbed, free from forestry or agricultural use. The goal is to observe and conduct long-term research on natural processes. Numerous rare animal and plant species find ideal living conditions here. Fallen trees are left where they lie and become part of the natural cycle--they provide habitat for fungi, insects, mosses, and many other organisms. To protect these sensitive habitats, visitors may enter these areas only on designated hiking trails or, to a limited extent, as part of guided tours.

The _management zone_ surrounds the core zones and encompasses most of the particularly valuable natural areas. Unlike in the core zone, humans intervene here in a targeted manner--but solely to preserve the established cultural landscape. Many meadows, salt marshes, and nutrient-poor grasslands would gradually become overgrown with shrubs and lose their ecological value without grazing or mowing. That is why sheep, cattle, and other grazing animals are used to maintain these open landscapes. Bogs, reed beds, Bodden shores, and wetlands are also part of the management zone. They provide an important habitat for numerous bird species, amphibians, and insects.

The _Development Zone_ encompasses the inhabited areas of the biosphere reserve. Here you'll find villages, tourist facilities, farms, and many cultural attractions. The goal is to combine nature conservation with economic development. Agriculture, fishing, tourism, and crafts should be carried out as sustainably as possible and conserve natural resources. This zone is particularly interesting for vacationers, as it is home to many popular destinations such as Putbus, Lauterbach, the Moenchgut Peninsula, and numerous small fishing villages. Regional products, traditional architecture, and sustainable tourism define the area.
