Duplex Stainless Steel Round Bars: Properties, Grades

Duplex stainless steel round bars combine two different metallurgical structures in a single alloy, austenite and ferrite. This dual-phase design combines the strength of ferritic steel with the corrosion resistance and formability of austenitic steel, putting these bars to work in offshore platforms, chemical plants and marine equipment, anywhere pressure, heat and corrosive media hit a component at the same time. Chloride exposure, temperature swings and mechanical load affect which grade fits a given project, so selecting the right one starts with understanding the base properties, then matching a specific grade against the corrosion profile, strength requirement and fabrication process involved.

What Are Duplex Stainless Steel Round Bars?

Duplex stainless steel gets its name from a microstructure split approximately between austenite and ferrite, though the exact ratio shifts by grade. Producers control this balance through chromium, nickel, molybdenum and nitrogen content, then lock it in during solution annealing.

The ferrite phase brings strength and resistance to chloride stress corrosion. The austenite phase brings toughness and weldability. When combined, they form round bars that withstand mechanical stress without giving up corrosion resistance, something single-phase stainless steels struggle to balance.

Round bars in these grades come in diameters from 6 mm up to 500 mm or more, supplied hot-rolled, forged, or cold-finished. Machining requires slower cutting speeds and more rigid tooling due to the higher strength and its tendency to work-harden.

Key Duplex Stainless Steel Properties

Mechanical strength sits near the top of the list for bar stock in demanding service. Standard duplex 2205 carries a minimum yield strength of 450 MPa, approximately double that of austenitic grades like 304 or 316. Designers can use thinner sections without giving up load capacity.
General corrosion resistance depends on chromium and molybdenum content, which form a stable passive oxide layer on the bar surface. The Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number, or PREN, calculated from chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen content, differentiates grades from each other. Standard duplex is near 35, while super duplex grades cross 40.

Stress corrosion resistance addresses a known weakness in austenitic stainless steel, particularly in hot chloride environments. The ferrite phase interrupts propagation, which is why duplex bars find work in equipment that austenitic grades cannot withstand over time. Toughness holds up from around -50°C to 300°C across most grades, though the upper limit narrows for sustained high-temperature service. Weldability requires attention to heat input and filler metal selection, but standard procedures such as GTAW and SAW apply without special equipment.

Common Duplex Stainless Steel Grades

Duplex 2205, also known as UNS S31803 or UNS S32205, is the most widely specified duplex grade. It carries roughly 22% chromium, 5% nickel and 3% molybdenum, giving it a PREN near 35, a minimum yield strength of 450 MPa, and tensile strength above 620 MPa. It handles chloride environments up to moderate severity and covers most oil and gas, chemical and marine work.

Duplex 2304, or UNS S32304, uses a lighter alloy content, around 23% chromium and 4% nickel, with no molybdenum and a PREN of 24 or above. This makes it a lower-cost option, suited to structural and pressure applications where the top end of chloride resistance is not required.
Super Duplex 2507, or UNS S32750, raises chromium to about 25%, nickel to 7%, and molybdenum to 4%, pushing PREN above 40 and minimum yield strength to 550 MPa. It suits higher-chloride seawater and sour service conditions where 2205 falls short.

Super Duplex UNS S32760 adds tungsten and copper to a composition close to 2507, also exceeding PREN 40 with a minimum yield strength of 550 MPa. It improves crevice corrosion resistance in stagnant seawater, while the copper helps neutralise acidic conditions.

Standard duplex grades handle general corrosion and moderate chloride exposure. Super duplex grades step up for higher chloride concentrations, higher temperatures, or sour service where standard duplex reaches its limit.

Advantages of Using Duplex Steel Round Bars

The strength-to-weight ratio allows designers to use thinner sections, cutting material weight without cutting load capacity. Lower risk of corrosion-related failure follows from the passive layer and phase structure, particularly in chloride-heavy service.

Service life extends because the material resists the localised attack that shortens the life of standard austenitic bars in the same environment.

Duplex Steel Applications Across Industries

Oil and Gas: Offshore platforms use duplex steel for oil and gas structural components, piping, valves and pumps exposed to seawater and sour gas. Pressure-containing equipment benefits from the combined strength and chloride resistance, particularly in subsea and topside installations where failure carries a high cost.

Chemical Processing: Process vessels, tanks, pumps, valves and piping rely on duplex steel for chemical processing where acids, chlorides and elevated temperatures interact, conditions that would pit or standard 316L stainless steel sooner.

Marine Applications: Duplex steel for marine applications covers propeller shafts, offshore platform components and desalination equipment. Seawater intake systems expose metal to constant chloride contact, which is exactly the condition that duplex grades are designed to address.

Other Applications: Petrochemical plants, pulp and paper mills, power generation facilities and water treatment or desalination plants all use duplex round bars in fabricated components exposed to corrosive process streams.

Duplex Round Bars vs Conventional Stainless Steel Bars

Duplex grades outperform standard austenitic bars like 304 and 316 on yield strength, running close to double in most cases and on chloride pitting and stress corrosion resistance, particularly the super duplex grades with PREN above 40.

Material efficiency improves because higher strength allows thinner sections for the same load. Conventional austenitic bars remain the better fit for lower-stress, non-chloride environments, where lower material cost and simpler fabrication outweigh the added corrosion margin duplex offers.

Cost per kilogram runs higher for duplex, especially super duplex grades with molybdenum, tungsten and higher nickel content. Whether that premium pays off depends on the corrosion severity of the application and the cost of failure if a conventional grade falls short. Neither option works as a default choice, since service conditions and project requirements decide which one fits.

Factors to Consider When Selecting Duplex Steel Round Bars

Grade selection starts with the corrosive environment, chloride concentration, and operating temperature range. Mechanical strength requirements set the minimum yield and tensile values the application needs. Bar diameter and dimensional tolerance affect machining allowance and final part size.

Fabrication requirements, including welding procedure and post-weld heat treatment, need to match the grade's phase balance. Applicable standards, such as ASTM A276 or A479, define the specification the bar must meet. Surface finish requirements vary by end use, from mill finish for structural work to ground or polished finish for exposed marine components.

Quality documentation, including material test certificates and traceability records, confirms the bar meets the ordered specification and supplier capability in stocking the required grade, size, and finish, rounding out the selection process.

Choosing Reliable Duplex Round Bar Suppliers

Buyers should check grade and specification availability first, confirming the supplier stocks the exact UNS designation and standard the project requires. Material test certificates need to match the batch supplied, with full chemical composition and mechanical property results included. Traceability matters just as much. Each bar should trace back to its heat number and mill source, with dimensional accuracy and surface finish verified against the purchase order.

Testing capability, including PREN verification and mechanical testing on request, shows whether a supplier can back up what the certificate states. Packaging and handling protect the bar surface from damage during transit, more significant for polished or ground finishes. Niko Steel & Engineering LLP stocks duplex, super duplex and related alloy round bars for buyers working through these requirements, alongside other ferrous and non-ferrous stock. Industry experience and the ability to meet project-specific requirements, from custom lengths to specific test protocols, separate suppliers who can support ongoing procurement from those who cannot.

Conclusion

Duplex stainless steel round bars bring together strength, corrosion resistance, and a working temperature range that covers most industrial demands. The balance between austenite and ferrite makes this possible and that balance shifts across the four grades this piece covers, from 2304 through super duplex S32760.

Getting the grade right matters more than defaulting to the highest PREN available. A project running in mild chloride exposure does not need super duplex pricing, while one running subsea in sour service cannot afford to under-specify. Matching the grade to the corrosion profile, mechanical load, and fabrication process makes a duplex stainless steel round bar perform as expected over its service life.
