Victor Daniel Silva Encourages Consumers to Ask Where Their Seafood Comes From
Louisiana Gulf Coast commercial fisherman Victor Daniel Silva says simple questions about origin, seasonality, and local availability can help consumers better understand the journey seafood takes before reaching their plates.Baton Rouge, Louisiana - August 20, 2026 - When consumers shop for shrimp, crab, fish, and other seafood, commercial fisherman Victor Daniel Silva believes one of the most useful things they can do is also one of the easiest: ask where it came from.
Silva, a commercial fisherman based along the Louisiana Gulf Coast, is encouraging consumers to become more curious about seafood origin, seasonality, and local availability. He believes these basic questions can help people better understand a supply chain that often becomes invisible by the time seafood reaches a grocery store, market, or restaurant.
"By the time you see shrimp sitting on ice at a seafood counter, most of the story has disappeared," Silva said. "You don't see the boat leaving before sunrise, the weather decisions, the equipment, the handling at the dock, or everything that happened before those shrimp reached the store."
Understanding the Journey From Water to Table
Silva has spent much of his life around commercial fishing. He grew up in Beaufort, North Carolina, where his father introduced him to the trade at an early age. In his late 20s, Silva relocated to coastal Louisiana and continued his career in shrimping and crabbing.
That experience has given him a close look at how many steps can lie between harvesting seafood and serving it for dinner.
Seafood may pass through fishermen, docks, processors, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, and restaurants before reaching a consumer. The exact path varies considerably depending on the species, location, market, and product.
Silva believes consumers do not need to understand every part of that system. Instead, they can start with a few practical questions.
"I'd ask three things: Where was it caught, is it in season locally, and do you have a local option?" Silva said. "You don't have to know everything about fishing to ask those questions. If the person selling the seafood knows the product, you can learn quite a bit from a short conversation."
Seafood Is a Major Part of the American Food System
The questions are particularly relevant because the United States consumes seafood from both domestic and international sources.
Federal fisheries data have consistently shown that a large share of seafood consumed in the United States is imported through international trade. At the same time, U.S. commercial fisheries support coastal jobs and economic activity across the country.
For consumers, that means two similar-looking products at a seafood counter may have taken very different routes to get there.
Silva says the point is not to assume that one source is automatically good or bad. Instead, he wants consumers to become more aware of what they are purchasing.
"People ask where vegetables were grown or whether something came from a local farm, but we don't always have that same conversation about seafood," Silva said. "I think seafood should be part of that conversation too."
Why Seasonality Matters
Seasonality is another part of seafood purchasing that can be unfamiliar to consumers.
Different species have different harvesting seasons, regulations, biological cycles, and regional availability. Weather can also affect when fishermen can work and what reaches local markets.
For Silva, seasonality is simply part of life on the water.
"You can have a plan for the week and then lose several working days because the weather changes," he said. "That affects what comes back to the dock. Seafood isn't manufactured on a schedule, and I think understanding that helps people appreciate why availability can change."
Consumers interested in local seafood can ask markets and restaurants what is currently available from nearby fisheries, rather than expecting the same choices year-round.
Silva also recommends being flexible. Trying a different locally available species can sometimes introduce consumers to seafood they might otherwise overlook.
Local Does Not Have to Mean Complicated
Silva does not believe supporting local seafood requires consumers to completely change the way they shop or eat.
A good starting point is simply asking questions.
At a seafood market, consumers can ask what was landed locally. At a restaurant, they can ask whether any of the seafood on the menu comes from local fishermen. They can also learn which species are commonly harvested in their area and when those products are typically available.
"Nobody needs to turn grocery shopping into an investigation," Silva said. "Ask a couple of questions. If there's a good local option, consider trying it. The important part is becoming a little more connected to where your food comes from."
For families living near fishing communities, Silva also recommends visiting local seafood markets, working waterfronts, festivals, and other public events where consumers can meet industry professionals.
Seeing the Work Behind the Meal
The connection between catching seafood and eating it is especially visible in Silva's own home.
His wife, Marisol, enjoys cooking shrimp and experimenting with Gulf Coast flavors. One family favorite is Creole garlic butter shrimp served over slow-simmered grits.
"When I'm sitting there eating something Marisol made, I sometimes think about where those shrimp were earlier that morning," Silva said. "Everyone else is enjoying dinner, and I'm remembering the water, what the weather was doing, and how the day went. There can be a lot of work behind something that disappears from the plate in ten minutes."
That experience is one reason Silva wants consumers to understand more of the story behind their seafood.
He believes greater awareness can create stronger connections between consumers, fishermen, seafood businesses, and the coastal communities that support them.
His advice is intentionally simple: the next time seafood is on the shopping list or restaurant menu, ask where it came from.
"You don't need to become an expert," Silva said. "Being curious is enough to start."
