Starting the School Year with Opportunities: Inspire Inkster Celebrates the Expansion of Scouting America Programs at Wayne-Westland Community Schools

Sea Scouts from Ship 2026 enjoy learning how to sail. Ship 2026 recently launched at Wayne Memorial High School.
"The elementary Cub Scouts program is still going strong, and we are now able to offer the Scouts BSA, Venturing, Sea Scouts, and Exploring programs to our middle and high school students," explained Sarah Hughey, the President of Inspire Inkster. "This is important because each of these programs caters to the wide range of interests and needs of our youth while also providing different opportunities in terms of awards and other resources that scouts benefit from as they move on to post-secondary opportunities. We are proud to open every door possible for our youth and set them up for success in whichever program interests them."
Inspire Inkster partners with nine different scouting units in order to serve the students attending WWCSD as well as other youth who live nearby. A tenth unit, an Exploring post that focuses on career exploration, is about to launch at Wayne Memorial High School and will begin the school year by surveying youth to see which careers are of the most interest to them. While cost, location, transportation, and other barriers have previously made participation infeasible for most WWCSD students, the nonprofit has worked towards solving these problems in a variety of ways; for example, several meetings are provided on-site at school buildings, fundraising is provided to keep activities free or low-cost, and partnerships are developed with other community leaders and organizations who want to help the students experience scouting.
These efforts are made because Inspire Inkster believes that scouting helps keep youth on the "right path" as they grow older. Hughey stated, "Scouting helps youth set goals and work towards them, surrounds youth with strong peer and adult role models, provides positive memories that help build resilience, and gives participants a chance to explore interests while developing leadership skills." Furthermore, the youth currently involved in scouting with Inspire Inkster are excited to both participate in the new opportunities themselves and to invite others to also enjoy these activities and experiences.
"I like scouts because I get to do things that most people are not able to do, and I'm very grateful for it," described Arisaac, a Tenderfoot in Troop 499 who recently began participating in Ship 2026 and Crew 326 as well. "I think scouting is a very helpful way to learn multiple things you didn't know already. I also think that since I get to go to places that most people don't get to go, I can tell them that they could sign up for scouting to do things they don't usually get to do."
Inspire Inkster and its associated units hope to see more and more boys and girls aged 5 through 20 join the scouts and experience these opportunities. If interested in either enrolling a local youth in the scouts or supporting this work, please email inspireinkster@gmail.com.
