AI Matchmaking Is Replacing the Swipe - And Singles Over 30 Are Leading the Change
Katch (www.katch.ie) says exhausted singles are moving away from endless browsing and turning to a new generation of AI-powered matchmaking that simply gets them on dates. For more than a decade, online dating told singles that the answer to finding someone was more choice.
More profiles. More likes. More matches. More swiping.
But for a growing number of singles over 30, more choice has simply meant more work.
Now a different approach to online dating is beginning to emerge - stop asking singles to search through thousands of people and start doing the matchmaking for them.
Irish-founded dating service Katch is quickly becoming a go-to alternative for singles over 30 who have had enough of conventional dating apps.
Instead of presenting users with an endless catalogue of profiles, Katch operates more like a modern matchmaking service.
Its AI Matchmaker looks for compatible members, makes private introductions and helps arrange the date.
The member's job is remarkably simple: show up.
Katch founder Paul Numan believes this is where the dating industry is heading.
"People don't need another dating app with 10,000 profiles on it. They need someone to introduce them to one person they might actually like."
According to Numan, dating apps accidentally turned one of the most human experiences imaginable into something resembling online shopping.
A photo appears.
Swipe.
Another appears.
Swipe.
Match.
Chat.
Disappear.
Repeat.
For singles in their 30s, 40s and 50s - often juggling careers, children, businesses and busy lives - spending hours every week managing dating apps has increasingly lost its appeal.
Katch is built around the opposite idea.
Rather than asking: "Who do you like?"
Katch asks: "Who should we introduce you to?"
That distinction may sound small, but it fundamentally changes the dating experience.
Users aren't expected to spend evenings scrolling through profiles or competing for attention. Katch's role is to identify potential compatibility and move people towards an actual conversation and an actual date.
Numan describes it as bringing back the traditional matchmaker - but giving them technology, data and AI.
"Years ago, people met through friends, family, work or somebody saying, 'I know someone you should meet.' That introduction carried weight. You gave the person a chance."
"Dating apps removed the introduction and replaced it with browsing. We are putting the introduction back."
And perhaps surprisingly, artificial intelligence may help make dating more human, rather than less.
While much of the technology industry is looking at how AI can help people write messages, improve profiles or create better photographs, Katch uses AI for a much simpler objective:
finding two compatible people and getting them talking.
There are no weeks of trying to impress someone through text.
No need to collect hundreds of matches.
And no requirement to become good at playing the dating-app game.
The objective isn't another match notification.
It's a date.
That distinction appears particularly important to singles over 30, who are increasingly looking for efficiency rather than entertainment from dating services.
"A 38-year-old with a career and a busy life doesn't necessarily want another app to manage," says Numan.
"They want to meet somebody. That's the problem we're trying to solve."
The irony is that after years of increasingly sophisticated dating technology, the future of dating may look remarkably similar to its past.
Someone finds somebody suitable.
They make an introduction.
Two people meet.
The difference is that the person making the introduction may now be an AI matchmaker.
And if the growing frustration with swiping continues, the dating app of the future might not feel like a dating app at all.
It might simply feel like having your own matchmaker.
