BAFA Funding for Marketing and Positioning: What SMEs Should Keep in Mind in 2026

Many medium-sized companies invest in a new website, SEO, or campaigns even though the actual foundation is still missing: clear positioning. As a result, they begin working on these initiatives before clarifying who the offering is intended for, what problem it solves, and why customers should choose this particular company.

A new website alone is not a strategy. Period.

BAFA consulting grants may be a good option for this conceptual work. The "Funding for Management Consulting for SMEs" program subsidizes external consulting services addressing economic, financial, personnel, and organizational issues related to business management. According to the currently published official program guidelines, applications can be submitted through December 31, 2026.

This makes the second half of 2026 particularly relevant--not because companies should act hastily, but because the need for consulting, the selection of a consulting firm, the application process, and the project launch must all be planned in the correct sequence.

Is marketing consulting even eligible for funding?

Marketing is not automatically eligible for funding. The funding is intended for individualized and conceptual business consulting. This includes an analysis of the situation, the identification of specific weaknesses, and clear recommendations for action. Strategic marketing consulting and positioning work may fall under this category if they are addressed as economic issues of corporate management.

It is not the "marketing" label that matters, but the specific task at hand.

Typical strategic elements may include:

* Analysis of target audiences, the market, and the competition
* Development of a clear positioning and a robust value proposition
* Refinement of the offering, service structure, and business model
* Design of a transparent marketing and sales process
* Prioritizing suitable channels and developing an implementation roadmap

Where Funding Ends

Pure implementation is a different matter. Creating a website, ongoing SEO work, placing ads, graphic design, content production, or ongoing campaign management are generally not considered conceptual management consulting. Seminars, group events, and consulting sessions that essentially amount to the sale of the provider's own goods or implementation services may also be excluded from funding.

For companies, this means: Consulting and implementation should be clearly separated from one another in terms of content, contracts, and billing. Consulting provides analysis, a concept, recommendations, and a written report. Subsequent implementation falls outside the scope of the funded consulting project. Whether a specific project meets the requirements is determined by the BAFA and the relevant agencies on a case-by-case basis.

How much is the consulting grant?

The maximum eligible amount is 3,500 euros per consulting engagement. For business locations in North Rhine-Westphalia and the other former West German states, the funding rate is 50 percent. This means a maximum grant of 1,750 euros per consulting engagement is possible. In the new federal states, as well as in the Lueneburg and Trier regions, the rate is 80 percent, or a maximum of 2,800 euros. For Berlin and the Leipzig region, the rate applicable to the old federal states applies.

During the current funding period, a maximum of two consulting sessions per year and a total of no more than five sessions may be funded. There is no legal entitlement to funding. Decisions are made in accordance with the funding criteria and available budgetary resources.

The most common mistake happens before you start

The application must be submitted before the consultation begins. The consulting contract may also only be concluded after the control center has sent its informational letter. Retroactive funding is not permitted. Following the correct sequence is therefore not a minor detail, but a prerequisite.

* Describe your consulting needs in concrete terms and define the desired outcome.
* Select a consulting firm that meets BAFA requirements.
* Submit the application online via the BAFA application platform. Companies in their first year of operation must also attend an informational meeting with a regional partner.
* Wait for the notification letter. Only then should you sign the contract and begin the consulting services.
* Complete the consulting services, pay the invoice in full, and submit the report and proof of funds within the specified deadline.

How SMEs Can Recognize Valuable Consulting

A good consulting project doesn't end with fancy words. It enables decision-making. By the end, it should be clear which target groups take priority, what the core offering is, how the company differentiates itself from the competition, and which measures should be implemented first.

This is the crucial point: BAFA funds consulting and knowledge acquisition, not advertising. This is precisely why a well-structured positioning consultation can be valuable. It lays the groundwork before money is invested in a website, SEO, content, or campaigns.

Why the 2026 Program Deadline Matters Now

According to the recently published guidelines, the application deadline is December 31, 2026. Companies that wish to have their positioning or marketing process strategically reviewed this year should therefore not wait until the last week of December. The information published by the BAFA at the time of application always remains decisive.

Funding can reduce consulting costs. It does not replace the business decision.
