Startup Society Guwahati's Business Teen Conclave Inspires

What happens when young minds are given the opportunity to step into the shoes of corporate leaders and defend decisions on some of the most difficult questions facing modern businesses? The answer came through the Business Teen Conclave, an initiative by Startup Society Guwahati that brought together a group of ambitious young participants for two days of business discussion, debate, strategic thinking, and ethical decision-making.

Built around the theme "Balancing Profit and Ethics in the Workplace," the conclave created an environment where participants were encouraged to look beyond conventional classroom learning and engage with business challenges from the perspective of real companies. Held online on 15 and 16 July 2026, the event focused on developing leadership, communication, analytical thinking, confidence, teamwork, and a deeper understanding of responsible business practices.

The concept placed participants in the position of corporate representatives. Each delegate was assigned a company and expected to understand its business perspective, values, and strategic interests before representing it during the discussions. Rather than simply presenting prepared opinions, participants had to defend their assigned company's position, respond to questions, engage with opposing arguments, and contribute to discussions around the central theme.

The format was designed to make the experience as interactive as possible. The event moved through opening speeches, questioning from fellow participants, open debate, and the preparation of solution papers addressing the agenda. This progression gave delegates an opportunity to demonstrate not only their ability to speak but also their ability to listen, analyze, respond, defend an argument, and develop solutions.

Adding to the diversity of perspectives was the range of companies represented throughout the conclave. The participating delegates represented Tata, Microsoft, Swiggy, IKEA, Zara, Google, Nestlé, Starbucks, Nothing, and Anthropic.

The participant lineup included Satmadip Karmakar representing Tata, Gyanav Deka representing Microsoft, Ayan Banerjee representing Swiggy, Dhriti Agarwal representing IKEA, Ananya Kashyap representing Zara, Priyakshi Goswami representing Google, Abhay Dyuti Sahu representing Nestlé, Satkirat Singh representing Starbucks, Pratinav Mazumdar representing Nothing, and Ragini Chakravarty representing Anthropic.

Representing such a broad range of organizations required participants to approach the same central question from different corporate perspectives. The challenge was not simply to argue whether profit or ethics should take priority, but to consider how businesses can pursue growth while maintaining responsible practices and making decisions that can withstand scrutiny.

The event also placed considerable emphasis on the quality of the participants' reasoning. Delegates were evaluated across several areas, including understanding of their assigned company, business knowledge, quality of arguments, strategic thinking, communication, public speaking, ethical reasoning, rebuttal skills, confidence, professionalism, and collaboration.

The judging responsibility was undertaken by Arkasish Sarma Bordoloi, Founder of the Youth Digital Literacy Foundation (YDLF). His involvement added an evaluative perspective to the competition, with the event also incorporating one-on-one reviews as part of the overall experience.
After the discussions and evaluations concluded, the Business Teen Conclave recognized three participants for their overall performances.

Ayan Banerjee, representing Swiggy, emerged as the winner and secured the First Position, receiving prize money worth ₹1,000. Gyanav Deka, representing Microsoft, finished in Second Position and received ₹700, while Satmadip Karmakar, representing Tata, secured Third Position with prize money worth ₹500.

The results highlighted three participants who stood out in a competition that demanded preparation, confidence, strategic thinking, and the ability to communicate ideas effectively. Their performances also reflected the broader purpose of the conclave: encouraging young people to approach business not merely as a subject of study, but as a discipline requiring judgment, responsibility, and leadership.

For Startup Society Guwahati, the Business Teen Conclave represents its wider focus on creating opportunities for students, aspiring entrepreneurs, startup enthusiasts, and future innovators. The organization describes its work as centered around entrepreneurship, leadership, innovation, networking, and practical business education, with the broader objective of helping young people develop the capabilities required to become future business leaders.

The conclave's focus on experiential learning was particularly significant. Young people often encounter business concepts through textbooks, academic assignments, or theoretical discussions. A simulation such as this creates a different kind of learning environment, where participants have to apply what they know, react to other viewpoints, and make their arguments under competitive conditions.

The experience also reinforced the importance of ethical thinking in business. Profitability remains a fundamental objective for organizations, but modern businesses operate within increasingly complex expectations involving employees, customers, communities, investors, and other stakeholders. By placing ethics at the heart of its central debate, the Business Teen Conclave encouraged participants to consider the wider consequences of corporate decision-making.

The event also provided recognition beyond the final rankings, with the official event framework including digital certificates for participants as well as recognition for the Best Delegate, judge, and volunteers.

The Business Teen Conclave was organized by Startup Society Guwahati, with Arkasish Sarma Bordoloi serving as judge. Uzi World Digital and Vastavikta were associated with the initiative as media partners.

More than a competition, the conclave offered its participants an opportunity to experience the dynamics of business leadership at an early stage. They were required to research organizations, understand corporate perspectives, communicate under pressure, challenge ideas respectfully, and work toward solutions rather than simply identifying problems.

As the event concluded, its strongest outcome extended beyond the names on the winners' list. The experience gave a group of young participants a platform to test their ideas, build confidence, and understand that leadership is not simply about having the right answer. It is about being able to explain a decision, defend it when challenged, understand its consequences, and remain open to better solutions.

With Startup Society Guwahati continuing to create platforms focused on practical business learning and youth leadership, the Business Teen Conclave stands as an example of how experiential opportunities can help prepare young minds for a future in which business success will increasingly depend on the ability to balance ambition with responsibility.
