Park Hotel Tokyo's Artist in Hotel: Immerse Yourself in the Beauty of Transience
Artist Room Fireworks -- An Interview with Japanese Artist Ayairo-- Painting the Beauty of Transience: the Creation of an immersive art experience --Tokyo, Japan, 6th Aug 2026 - At Park Hotel Tokyo (Operated by Shiba Park Hotel Co., Ltd. / Minato-ku, Tokyo / President: Noriyoshi Tanaka), artists paint directly onto the walls and ceilings of our guest rooms, shaping each space in its entirety into a single art installation. We call them Artist Rooms.
Taking Japanese culture and Japanese aesthetics as its themes, the project works hand in hand with Japanese artists to create stay experiences found nowhere else.
Here we introduce the Artist Room "Fireworks" (available from September 2025) by Ayairo. In this interview she speaks about the background to her work and the thoughts she carried into the room.
Ayairo shares the inspiration and creative story behind her artwork.
From English to Art: How Ayairo Became a Japanese Artist
Although her interests may appear unrelated, Ayairo sees them as connected in a single line. She loved to draw from an early age, and a fascination with Hollywood actors led her to study English. Through studying abroad, she encountered other cultures and began to look more closely at her own identity. The sense that drawing allowed her to understand something about herself led her to begin painting works themed around childhood.
Satoyama and Childhood: The Origins of Her Japanese Art
Ayairo's view of her own work has changed significantly since she began. Rather than painting to convey a predetermined message, her work now begins with an impulse -- something moves her. As she works, she selects and discards repeatedly, only later recognizing what drew her. That process has become the axis of her practice.
As a result, Ayairo expresses not the landscape itself but the sensation it evokes. For her, exploring that sensation is the essence of creation. She is strongly drawn to what emerges suddenly from light and shadow, dusk, or rippling water -- beautiful yet unable to hold its form; present yet impossible to grasp. Childhood holds the same transience as a theme: it remains vivid in memory, yet can never be revisited. Her work is an ongoing effort to understand "the beauty of transience," the thread that has drawn her throughout her career.
Motifs that layer memories of childhood over satoyama scenes give the space its sense of story.
An Entire Room as Canvas: Creating an Immersive Art Experience
Accustomed to painting on flat canvases, Ayairo worked across a full 360-degree space for the first time. She approached the room not as a work to be "looked at" but as a space to be "experienced," designing everything from the scale and placement of the fireworks to the open areas and the flow from the corridor in pursuit of immersion. Because the setting is a hotel, she kept the work closely connected to the stay experience and used open space to create a room where guests can spend time comfortably. The project changed not the motif but the perspective, with the entire space conceived as a single experience.
The Story and the Colors Behind the "Fireworks" Art Installation
Ayairo chose fireworks as a motif for their distinctly Japanese character. The fireworks painted on the window glass catch their own reflections, creating unity between the outside and inside and making the space feel more expansive. Brilliant and exhilarating in the moment, yet gone in an instant, fireworks also symbolize "the beauty of transience." Ayairo layered their brilliance with that fleeting quality in the room's expression.
Color is central to Ayairo's work. The gradation of dusk expresses the sensation of transition -- indistinct, hazy, and wavering -- and is one of the expressions she values most. By bringing black into the upper part of the room, she conveyed the flow of time and a sense of depth while balancing the composition as a whole. The room was painted with close attention to expression rooted in her own sensations.
Artist Room: a live-in studio where artists create during their residency. The entire space is designed as an "experience."
A Message to Guests from Overseas: Touching Japanese Culture
Rather than prescribing how guests should feel, Ayairo hopes they will simply enjoy the space freely. She notes that responses to fireworks differ greatly across cultures and countries. In Japan, many people see fireworks as not only beautiful but also accompanied by the fleetingness and ache of a summer that vanishes in an instant. Ayairo considers that delicate aesthetic sense part of what makes Japan distinctive, and hopes a stay in the room gives overseas visitors an opportunity to experience Japanese sensibility.
The Artist Room "Fireworks," painted in delicate hues, embodies the theme of the beauty found in impermanence and subtle fluctuations.
