PPK Ormawa HMIK Universitas Udayana Strengthens Coastal Community Preparedness Through Basic Life Support Training

The activity involved fishermen, members of the Family Welfare Movement (PKK), and local residents as an effort to improve community knowledge, skills, and preparedness in responding to emergency situations.
As a coastal area with active fishing activities, Kusamba Village has various occupational risks that may occur during daily activities, particularly among fishermen. Situations requiring immediate assistance can happen unexpectedly, making Basic Life Support skills an important capability for communities living and working in coastal environments.
Through the Maritime Safety Program, the PPK Ormawa HMIK Universitas Udayana team provided education and practical training on Basic Life Support while also conducting health screening for participants. The health screening included blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, and uric acid assessments as an effort to increase health awareness and support early identification of potential health risks.
The activity began with an educational session introducing the fundamental concepts of Basic Life Support, including emergency recognition and the importance of providing appropriate initial assistance. The session was delivered interactively, allowing participants to engage in discussions and ask questions related to emergency situations that may occur in their daily lives.
Following the educational session, participants took part in hands-on Basic Life Support practice with guidance from instructors. Through direct practice, participants were able to understand the application of emergency response techniques and gain confidence in providing initial assistance during critical situations.
The training was delivered by Dr. Ns. I Kadek Saputra, S.Kep., M.Erg, who served as the speaker and instructor. He provided educational materials and guided participants throughout the practical session to ensure proper understanding of Basic Life Support procedures.
The activity received positive responses from participants, as shown through active discussions and enthusiasm throughout the training. The involvement of fishermen, PKK members, and community representatives reflected the growing awareness of the importance of emergency preparedness and health knowledge within coastal communities.
The Head of the Kusamba Fishermen Group, Wayan Suartika, expressed his appreciation for the activity. He stated that the Basic Life Support training provided valuable knowledge and skills that could be applied directly when facing emergency situations during fishing activities.
Through the Maritime Safety Program, PPK Ormawa HMIK Universitas Udayana hopes that the knowledge and skills provided can become a valuable resource for the Kusamba community in strengthening safety awareness, improving emergency preparedness, and supporting the development of healthier and more resilient coastal communities.

About PPK Ormawa HMIK 2026
PPK Ormawa HMIK 2026 is a student-led community empowerment team from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Udayana, Bali, Indonesia. The team represents the Nursing Student Association (Himpunan Mahasiswa Ilmu Keperawatan/HMIK) and participates in the Student Organization Capacity Strengthening Program (PPK Ormawa), a national program that encourages student organizations to develop community-based initiatives.
Through this initiative, the team focuses on implementing sustainable solutions for local challenges in coastal communities, particularly in Desa Kusamba, Klungkung, Bali. The programs are designed to support community empowerment through environmental awareness, maritime safety education, sustainable fisheries, and development of local fishery products.
Driven by youth leadership and collaboration with local communities, the initiative aims to create positive social, environmental, and economic impacts.
