Why "cellophane" became a generic word
Jacques Brandenberger invented cellophane in 1908 as a clear, flexible, biodegradable film made from regenerated cellulose. DuPont commercialised it. For most of the twentieth century it held the only meaningful market position for "clear wrap." As a result, the word drifted from a specific material into a generic descriptor for anything clear and flexible - the same way "thermos" replaced "vacuum flask" or "kleenex" replaced "facial tissue."
Three forces accelerated that drift: the search-engine economy (OPP converters optimise for "cellophane supplier" keywords), the rise of sustainability language (buyers asking "compostable" meet films that look visually compliant but are not), and the price gap (regenerated cellulose sits at a price band several times higher than commodity OPP, which incentivises mislabelling the cheaper material).
The result is a market in which the word "cellophane" no longer reliably tells you what is in the roll.

Run the five-test fingerprint before signing off on the order. None of the tests on its own is conclusive; together they reliably resolve genuine regenerated cellulose from OPP and BOPP.
1. The burn test (the fastest single indicator)
Hold a corner of the film to a flame. Genuine cellophane chars with a paper-like flame, ignites and burns at roughly the rate of paper, and leaves a soft grey ash. OPP melts, beads, and resolidifies into a translucent droplet that you can pick up with tweezers; the smell is petrochemical, not papery. The burn test takes about ten seconds and is the single most reliable single-step check on cellulose content.
2. The water test
Wet a corner of the film with water. Genuine cellophane absorbs water, swells slightly, softens, and loses rigidity. OPP is hydrophobic; water beads off and the film stays rigid and unchanged. Cellulose-acetate film behaves more like OPP - it does not swell in water, which is one structural cue that distinguishes regenerated cellulose from its sister polymer.
3. The density test
Cut a small square, weigh it, and measure dimensions to compute density. Regenerated cellulose films land in the 1.4-1.5 g/cm range. OPP is around 0.90 g/cm - a difference of roughly 50% in density, immediately obvious in a controlled lab comparison. The density test catches cases where a converter adds a thin cellulose coating to PET or BOPP to claim a "cellulose" identity.
4. The solvent test (for lab confirmation)
Under controlled conditions, regenerated cellulose softens in certain polar solvents (such as dilute sodium hydroxide or specific organic solvent systems) while OPP does not. 5. The compost claim audit
Request the supplier's ASTM D6400 or EN 13432 test report, the certificate number, the issuing body's URL, and the certificate's expiry date. Then verify it on the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) database in North America or the European Bioplastics standards page. A genuine compostability claim is verifiable in seconds; a fabricated claim falls apart on first lookup.

The supplier's sales document says "cellulose-style film" or "cellulose-look film." The brochure says "cellophane." The test report, when you finally get it, is for a different product. The verbal pitch is anchored to "compostable" and "bio-based"; the actual product is OPP. This is by far the most common pattern and the easiest to fix with a tighter spec.
Pattern 2 - the laminated composite
The product is a multi-layer laminate with one thin cellulose layer and one or more petroleum-derived layers (PE, PET, EVOH). The brochure says "cellulose film" because cellulose is in the structure. The film does not biodegrade because the petroleum layers are still there. This pattern survives casual audits because the structure sounds defensible but the end-of-life behaviour is not what the spec calls for.
Pattern 3 - the certified grade, shipped different product
The supplier has a valid compostability certificate - but for a different grade than the one shipped. The certificate references a 30 m transparent cellulose film with a specific coating system. The rolls in your warehouse are 25 m BOPP. This is rare but the highest-stakes version because the supplier's paperwork looks correct on first inspection. Verify the certificate's grade designation matches the roll label exactly.

Three certification marks carry most of the weight on a packaging spec. Each corresponds to a specific test programme and a published database of certified grades.
* BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute, North America). The BPI directory lists every certified product, with grade, certificate number, and expiry. Verification is a search box, free, and takes about a minute.
* EN 13432 (European industrial composting). The standard is published through CEN national bodies; the certification is run by accredited certification bodies (TUV Austria OK Compost, DIN CERTCO, and others). The European Bioplastics body consolidates industry-level guidance. * ASTM D6400 (US-side companion to EN 13432). The ASTM D6400 standard page lists the test programme; certification is run by accredited bodies and listed in their respective public databases.
None of these marks on their own proves a film is regenerated cellulose - they prove the film meets a set of industrial composting criteria. What they do prove, definitively, is that an OPP film cannot have either mark. So a film carrying one of these marks has at least cleared the chemistry screen - and you can then run the five-test fingerprint to confirm the underlying material is genuinely cellulose.
What real cellulose labels actually say
Cellulose, regenerated cellulose, regenerated cellulose film, and cellophane are the four descriptors that mean what they say in a spec. "Plant-based plastic," "eco-film," "biodegradable plastic wrap," and "compostable plastic" are four descriptors that legally can refer to a wide range of products - including OPP with a cellulose additive. The descriptors are not interchangeable.
If the label says "made from plants" without naming the polymer, ask which plant and which polymer. A genuine regenerated cellulose label says "from wood pulp, regenerated cellulose" or refers to the viscose process by name. A label that says "plant-based" without saying "regenerated cellulose" is hiding the answer to the question you need answered.
For buyers working to a sustainability brief, the recommended language for a packaging spec is: "regenerated cellulose film from sustainably managed wood pulp, biodegrades in soil, home compost, and marine environments, third-party certified to EN 13432 / ASTM D6400, manufacturer to be identified on label." This anchors the polymer, the end-of-life pathway, the certification, and the chain of custody in one sentence.
A three-step qualification protocol
For buyers who want to lock the substitution out before it lands at their receiving dock, the protocol below runs in three steps and ties directly into a packaging spec.
* First article qualification. Before issuing the first purchase order, request a 5-10 m sample of the named grade from the supplier, plus the test report corresponding to that specific grade, plus a copy of the certification body's certificate listing that grade by name. Run the five-test fingerprint on the sample. Do not proceed unless all five tests pass and the certificate matches.
* Pre-shipment verification. For ongoing supply, require the supplier to attach the lot number, production date, and the corresponding certificate reference on the roll label. At receipt, sample-test one roll per shipment using at least the burn test and density test. Reject on mismatch.
* Annual re-qualification. Once a year, request the supplier to re-submit the test report and certificate for the grade. Verify the certificate is still active and covers the grade currently being shipped. Audit the supplier's incoming raw-material chain if end-of-life claims are part of the buyer-facing spec.

Alternatives to a fake "cellophane"
If the audit tells you the current supplier is shipping OPP, you have four honest paths forward, not one.
* Switch to genuine cellophane. Regenerated cellulose films, including our reels and sheets range, deliver the same visual and tactile properties buyers associate with "cellophane" and clear the end-of-life claim honestly.
* Switch to PLA on a credible line. Polylactic acid is industrially compostable and seals well on FFS equipment, but it does not biodegrade in soil or backyard compost. The claim has to be "industrially compostable" rather than "compostable" - be specific.
* Switch to an honest petrochemical film. Recyclable BOPP or PET is a legitimate choice for markets with reliable PP or PET recycling streams. The sustainability claim is "recyclable in PP/PET" rather than "compostable" - again, be specific about the end-of-life pathway the film actually supports.
* Switch to a different substrate altogether. Some applications (e.g., tie bands for craft packaging) can use paper-based or starch-based substrates with a thin cellulose coating. The substitution depends on the line and the end-use.
None of these paths involves pretending a petrochemical film is something it is not. The "fake cellophane" market exists because the gap between the actual polymer and the marketing language has been left open for too long.
