Nature-Based Coaching: What Research Really Shows About Outdoor Coaching

We all know from everyday experience that nature is good for us. There is now also a growing body of robust research that explains why this is the case and what it means for outdoor coaching. A central concept is psychologist Stephen Kaplan's Attention Restoration Theory: Natural environments place fewer demands on focused attention than cities or screens, allowing the brain to recover and mental fatigue to subside even before a conversation begins.

On a physiological level, research by Japanese physician Yoshifumi Miyazaki shows a measurable increase in the activity of the immune system's natural killer cells, as well as a significant reduction in cortisol levels following brief visits to the forest. A British study involving approximately 20,000 participants (White et al., 2019) also found that just 120 minutes of time spent in nature per week is associated with a significantly higher likelihood of good health and well-being, regardless of how that time is distributed throughout the week.

The cognitive aspect has also been studied: A 2014 Stanford study by Oppezzo and Schwartz shows that people solve creative tasks significantly better while walking than while sitting.
