The Garden Finance hack has returned to the attention of cryptocurrency users and cybersecurity researchers as the cross-chain protocol releases additional information about the security incident that resulted in approximately $11.4 million in digital assets being taken from a solver operator.
The incident occurred on October 30, 2025, affecting assets held by one of the independent solvers supporting Garden Finance's cross-chain swapping infrastructure. Initial estimates varied from approximately $5.5 million to more than $10.8 million as investigators identified transactions across multiple blockchain networks. A later forensic update placed the total at approximately $11.4 million.
Garden Finance maintained that the incident was confined to the affected solver's operational environment and that user funds were not directly affected. Nevertheless, the event has prompted wider discussions about the security assumptions behind cross-chain protocols, private-key protection and the role of off-chain market makers.
What Is Garden Finance?
Garden Finance is a cross-chain protocol that allows users to exchange Bitcoin and other digital assets between different blockchain networks. Its system uses atomic swaps, which are designed to enable two parties to exchange assets without transferring them to a conventional centralized custodian.
Rather than relying on a single pool of deposited customer assets, Garden uses solvers to supply liquidity and complete swaps. Solvers function like market makers. When a user requests a cross-chain transaction, a solver provides the corresponding asset on the destination network.
Garden's documentation presents the atomic-swap model as a way to reduce custody risks. However, the hack demonstrated that the infrastructure operated by individual solvers may still contain valuable assets and privileged credentials attractive to attackers.

How the Garden Finance Hack Happened
According to Garden Finance's account of the incident, an attacker gained unauthorized access to the operating environment of one of the protocol's largest solver operators. The attacker subsequently transferred assets belonging to that solver across several blockchain networks.
The affected assets reportedly included wrapped Bitcoin, wrapped Ether, USDC, USDT, cbBTC, Lombard-related Bitcoin assets, and Garden's SEED token. The stolen or unauthorizedly transferred tokens were rapidly converted into ETH through decentralized trading tools.
Converting freezable stablecoins into ETH can reduce the ability of issuers to stop the assets at the token-contract level. Moving funds across different blockchains can also complicate the investigation because analysts must connect transactions through bridges, routers, and liquidity pools.
Garden temporarily shut down its application after discovering the incident. The project stated that the core atomic-swap protocol had not been exploited and that no vulnerability was identified in the primary smart-contract system.
Independent Investigation Focused on Solver Layer
In January 2026, Garden Finance announced the results of an independent forensic investigation. The project said the findings supported its initial position that the compromise was limited to the solver layer.
According to the project's published update, the attacker did not access user wallets, Garden's core protocol contracts or assets belonging to other solver operators. The approximately $11.4 million loss was attributed to the compromised solver's holdings.
This distinction is important, but it does not eliminate the broader operational-security questions raised by the incident. A cross-chain system may use trustless smart contracts while still depending on organizations that manage private keys, servers, liquidity, and transaction-signing infrastructure.
The compromise of a solver can therefore cause a major financial loss without requiring an attacker to identify a flaw in the underlying atomic-swap code.
Garden Offers Hacker a 10% Bounty
Following the attack, Garden Finance sent an on-chain message offering the responsible party a 10% white-hat bounty. Under the proposal, the attacker could retain a portion of the assets in exchange for returning the remaining amount and providing information about the method used to compromise the solver.
Such offers have become common after decentralized-finance incidents. Blockchain transfers cannot usually be reversed by the affected protocol, so projects sometimes provide a financial incentive for the person responsible to cooperate.
Publicly available reports did not initially confirm that the offer had been accepted. Garden also began working with security specialists, exchanges and blockchain investigators to track the unauthorized transactions.
SEED Token Reacts to the Incident
The security news affected Garden's SEED token as traders responded to reports of the hack. Early coverage indicated that the token declined sharply after part of the attacker's holdings was sold into relatively thin liquidity pools.
A falling token price does not necessarily represent additional assets taken from wallets. It reflects changes in supply, demand, available liquidity and market sentiment. Holders may experience substantial losses when large quantities are sold into a market that cannot absorb them without major price movement.
Wallet interfaces may continue displaying an estimated balance based on the last recorded price, even when a large position cannot be sold for that amount. Users should therefore examine pool liquidity and expected slippage rather than relying exclusively on a displayed dollar value.
Broader Questions About Cross-Chain Security
The Garden Finance hack illustrates how cross-chain protocols have multiple layers of exposure. Smart contracts may be audited and function as designed, but solvers, relayers, front-end websites and administrative systems remain potential targets.
A compromised private key can allow an attacker to transfer a solver's assets without exploiting the bridge's central code. Server intrusions, malicious software, social engineering and inadequate credential management can all create similar risks.
Protocols should therefore assess both on-chain and off-chain security. Important protections include hardware-based signing systems, transaction limits, role separation, real-time wallet monitoring and procedures for rapidly disabling compromised infrastructure.
Solver operators must also maintain enough accessible liquidity to perform swaps efficiently. This requirement can make their wallets attractive targets because attackers know that substantial assets may be available across several networks.
Were Garden Finance Users Affected?
Garden Finance said that user funds were not affected and that the incident involved assets belonging to a solver operator. Users should nevertheless verify the status of any transaction that was pending when the application paused.
A completed atomic swap should show transfers on both the originating and destination networks. If a transaction remained incomplete, the user should collect the swap identifier, wallet address, transaction hashes and timestamps before contacting Garden through its verified support channels.
Users should avoid unofficial accounts offering to complete delayed swaps or release locked funds. Fraudsters frequently impersonate project support teams after widely reported hacks. A legitimate support representative will not request a wallet seed phrase or private key.
How to Trace Transactions Connected to the Garden Finance Hack
Blockchain records allow investigators to follow the movement of assets linked to the incident. The process begins with the relevant transaction hash and the address from which the assets were transferred.
Each transaction can be checked through the appropriate blockchain explorer. Investigators can then document conversions through decentralized exchanges, transfers to cross-chain bridges and deposits into centralized trading platforms.
When assets reach a centralized exchange, the exchange may possess customer-identification details associated with the recipient account. These records are generally provided only through formal compliance or law-enforcement procedures.
Garden users investigating an individual transaction should preserve the originating-chain hash, destination-chain hash, swap identifier, asset type and amount. Screenshots of error messages or pending transaction notices may provide additional context, but blockchain data remains the primary evidence.
Garden Finance Hack Highlights Operational Risk
The Garden Finance incident did not reportedly result from a flaw in the protocol's central atomic-swap contracts. Instead, the available findings indicate that an attacker compromised a solver's operational environment and transferred approximately $11.4 million across multiple networks.
The distinction may reassure users concerned about the custody of assets during ordinary swaps, but it also highlights an important lesson for the wider DeFi industry: decentralized smart contracts are only one component of a protocol's security.
Cross-chain services depend on liquidity providers, servers, signing devices, and private-key controls. Protecting these operational layers is essential for reducing the likelihood of similar incidents. Users interacting with Garden Finance or another bridge should verify addresses carefully, monitor transaction status and preserve on-chain evidence whenever a swap does not complete as expected.
