O-ring Characteristics and Advantages

O-rings, with their simple shape and efficient sealing performance, are widely used in various industries such as hydraulics, pneumatics, machinery, automotive, and aerospace. An O-ring is a small-section, circular sealing element, typically with a circular cross-section, and is mainly made of synthetic rubber [1]. In hydraulic systems, O-rings are primarily used for static and dynamic sealing. Compared to other sealing elements, they have the following characteristics:

1) Good sealing performance and long service life.

2) A single ring can provide sealing in two directions.

3) Good adaptability to oil, temperature, and pressure.

4) Low dynamic friction resistance.

5) Small size, light weight, and low cost.

6) Simple sealing structure and easy assembly and disassembly.

7) Can be used for both static and dynamic sealing.

8) Standardized dimensions and grooves, making selection and purchase convenient.

Due to these numerous advantages, O-rings are widely used in hydraulic engineering, especially in various types of hydraulic cylinders, where they are almost universally used as sealing elements. An O-ring is an extrusion-type seal; its sealing principle is based on external pressure or compression deformation during installation, causing the O-ring to conform to the sealing surface, thus preventing fluid or gas leakage. Because O-rings are made of relatively soft synthetic rubber, improper handling during the assembly of hydraulic cylinders can lead to damage, resulting in oil leakage, pressure loss, and other quality problems, and even causing accidents.

Analysis of O-ring Damage Causes

O-ring damage can manifest in various forms, but the most serious damage often occurs during the assembly process. Improper assembly procedures and inadequate protection measures for the O-ring are the main reasons for O-ring damage.

Below, we analyze the causes of O-ring damage during assembly using two typical cases.

2.1 O-ring Scratched by Set Screw Threads

A multi-section hydraulic cylinder [2] used in a certain product model required disassembly after assembly and testing. Upon disassembly, significant scratches were found on the O-ring of the piston. After repeatedly searching for the cause of the O-ring damage, and ruling out causes such as oil impurities and burrs on the inner wall of the cylinder, it was finally discovered that the culprit behind the O-ring damage was the set screw threads on the end face of the hydraulic cylinder.

The structure of the hydraulic Cylinder End [https://www.mpmmachine.com/cylinder-end/] face is shown in Figure 1. The piston and cylinder barrel have a clearance fit, and the clearance is very small. During assembly, as the O-ring passes over the set screw threads, the elastic force of the O-ring inevitably causes friction with the sharp edges of the threads. Since the O-ring material is a relatively soft synthetic rubber, it will inevitably be scratched by the sharp edges of the threads, causing damage to the O-ring. This type of damage is very insidious; it is difficult to detect without disassembling and inspecting the cylinder after the piston is installed. Furthermore, this damage often does not manifest itself during short-term use of the hydraulic cylinder. However, after long-term use, as the O-ring ages, the scratches will become larger under the pressure of the hydraulic fluid, eventually leading to internal leakage and pressure loss in the hydraulic cylinder, leaving a serious quality hazard for the product.

2.2 Damage to O-ring Seal Caused by Shear Stress from the Retaining Ring Groove

The hydraulic cylinder structure of a certain product is shown in Figure 2. The cylinder barrel end has an annular retaining ring groove. During assembly, when the O-ring seal on the piston passes through the retaining ring groove, due to the small clearance between the piston body and the cylinder barrel, the piston body and the retaining ring groove of the cylinder barrel will cause shear damage to the O-ring seal, as shown in Figure 3.

When this type of damage occurs, it reduces the sealing contact area of the O-ring, causing internal leakage in the hydraulic cylinder. When such O-ring damage occurs, the hydraulic cylinder must be disassembled, the O-ring replaced, and then reassembled, leading to increased production costs and reduced efficiency.

Improved O-ring Assembly Measures

rings are easily scratched or cut and damaged during the assembly process. Therefore, effective protective measures must be taken during assembly to prevent O-ring damage, thereby reducing production costs and improving assembly efficiency [3].

3.1 Measures to address thread damage in fastening screw holes

To address the issue of O-rings being scratched by the threads of the fastening screw holes, the assembly method shown in Figure 4 was adopted. This method primarily relies on a self-made gasket, which is bent from a 0.2-0.5 mm thin copper sheet. The radius R shown in Figure 4 matches the inner diameter of the hydraulic cylinder barrel, ensuring a tight fit against the inner wall of the cylinder. The width B and length L of the gasket should completely cover the threads of the fastening screw hole. The edges and sharp corners of the gasket should be smoothed. When assembling the piston, this gasket is inserted into the area of the fastening screw hole threads at the end of the cylinder barrel, completely covering the threads. This allows the O-ring to pass smoothly over the threads, preventing the threads from scratching and damaging the O-ring. Figure 4 shows the case where the cylinder barrel has one fastening screw hole thread; if there are two threads, two gaskets should be used, and so on.

3.2 Measures to Address Shear Damage to O-rings Caused by Keyway Grooves

To address the issue of O-rings being damaged by shearing in the keyway grooves, a transitional assembly method is used. The specific method involves first creating a transitional washer as shown in Figure 5. The transitional washer is made of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) plastic, and its inner diameter, outer diameter, and thickness are the same as the corresponding dimensions of the keyway groove. An opening is cut in the transitional washer, making it a variable-diameter washer. The transitional washer is then compressed and inserted into the keyway groove, and then allowed to return to its original shape. This effectively fills the keyway groove, as shown in Figure 6. During assembly, the O-ring will pass smoothly through the keyway groove without being damaged by shearing.
