Alverdissen, July 6, 2026 - Burgdorf Immobilien has taken over the marketing of the castle in Alverdissen. Built in 1662, the castle is considered the original seat of the present-day Princely House of Schaumburg-Lippe. For new owners, the fully renovated castle offers numerous possibilities for use. Burgdorf Immobilien is marketing the castle under the slogan "Live. Work. Host."
An Eventful History
The roots of Alverdissen Castle date back to 1396, when a castle belonging to the Counts of Sternberg was first mentioned in historical records. In 1662, Friedrich Christian of Schaumburg-Lippe had the present-day Baroque castle built on those foundations--as a "modest courtly residence." For generations, the estate served as the residence of the Counts of Lippe and as the administrative seat under Princess Pauline of Lippe. Later, it housed the district court and was used as a branch of the State Archives of North Rhine-Westphalia. After being sold to a private owner in 2009 and undergoing a complete renovation, the castle was transformed into an exceptionally stylish residential and commercial building. Today, Alverdissen Castle combines historical substance and elegance with modern uses--a living architectural monument with cultural appeal that extends far beyond the region.
Substance and Structure--Developed with Vision
Alverdissen Castle uniquely combines its historical structure with modern uses. The historically protected complex underwent extensive renovation around 2010 and was redefined with great sensitivity to its architectural history and a clear vision for future-oriented usage concepts. Spanning over 800 square meters of residential and office space spread across three levels, the complex now features spaces equally suited for private living, prestigious events, or commercial use.
The castle's amenities are impressive
On the ground floor to the left is an imposing hall that has previously been used primarily as a branch of the registry office but is also suitable for other exclusive events, exhibitions, or as a seminar room. A spacious kitchen for event catering, as well as separate office units with their own entrance in the east wing, expand the range of possible uses.
The upper floor is currently used as a private living area. The approximately 110-square-meter living room with a fireplace and an adjoining open kitchen featuring a spacious dining area is a real highlight. This exclusive retreat is complemented by two large bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.
Two separate apartments with their own bathrooms have been created in the attic, providing space for guests or family members.
A passenger elevator provides access to all levels, from the historic vaulted cellar to the attic.
Architecturally, the castle building impresses with massive exterior walls over one meter thick, high-quality sandstone and natural stone floors, restored solid-wood fire doors, and classic window designs. The vaulted cellar is ideal as a stylish wine cellar, storage space, or potential expansion area.
The outdoor areas are as impressive as they are functional: a secluded terrace, a park-like garden with many old trees and rhododendrons, controllable outdoor lighting, and camera surveillance at the gate ensure security and privacy. The existing plans allow for structural expansion, e.g., for a guest house, a swimming pool, or garages--offering future owners even greater flexibility in use.
"Anyone looking for something extraordinary--whether for living, working, or entertaining--will find in Alverdissen Castle a property that is virtually one of a kind on the market," says Markus Burgdorf, owner of Burgdorf Real Estate.
Preconceptions don't apply here
"Whenever castles come on the market, we always encounter the same preconceptions," reports real estate agent Burgdorf, "for example, that maintenance is too expensive and that you'd first have to invest millions to adapt the castle to today's living standards."
The castle offered here has already been fully and very high-quality renovated. Considering that work, living, and reception areas are all under one roof, the cost of maintaining the property is only marginally higher than if these functions were spread across two or three buildings at different locations. Furthermore, with a total of 870 m2 of living and office space, the property is not too large. "You can't get lost in the castle, yet it features pleasantly spacious rooms," explains Burgdorf.
Quiet Location--Nestled Amid Culture, Nature, and Infrastructure
The castle is located in the Alverdissen district of the town of Barntrup, in the Lippe district of North Rhine-Westphalia. The charming surroundings are characterized by historic towns such as Bad Pyrmont, Blomberg, Schwalenberg, and the Extertal valley. The connection via the B238 to the A2 provides quick access to Bielefeld, Guetersloh, Hanover, and Paderborn. Numerous recreational activities--such as golf, horseback riding, hiking, and water sports--as well as the historic "Grafenweg" hiking trail underscore the high quality of life in this region. The castle is situated in the center of Alverdissen, nestled within a park-like garden that offers plenty of privacy.
"Alverdissen Castle combines historic charm with modern functionality and versatile uses. The meticulous renovation creates a rare opportunity for sophisticated living, working, or event concepts in a historic setting," Burgdorf concludes.
