Inside Archies' bid to stay relevant in India's new 'Expression Economy'
As India's gifting market evolves into an 'expression economy', Archies is reinventing itself with design-forward stores, quick commerce and creator-led content to make legacy emotionally and commercially relevant for a new generationMumbai: Remember paying Rs 200 extra to have a name embossed on a mug or a picture printed on a white t-shirt? Well, personalisation is a norm now. It has moved from premium add-on to baseline expectation.
Occasion-gifting has expanded beyond festivals to self-gifting, milestone gifting, and spontaneous expressions of affection. We now have 'cute pick-me-ups' and 'I bought this because I thought of you' or 'this is so me...'.
India's gifting market is big, growing, and changing fast. Valued at $75.16 billion in 2024 and projected to reach $92.32 billion by 2030 at a CAGR of 3.55% (ResearchandMarkets), it is no longer a seasonal spend category. It is a year-round expression economy, one being reshaped by a consumer who is younger, more visual, and far more demanding.
The shifts are structural
Discovery has migrated to Instagram Reels, Pinterest boards, and quick commerce apps. And aesthetics - the look and feel of a product, its packaging, its Instagrammability - have become as important as the sentiment behind it.
Add a wave of D2C gifting brands, design-led lifestyle retailers like Chumbak and Miniso, and platform-native players like Ferns N Petals and IGP - Indian gifting industry has come into its own with further growth projections.
The Archies of today...
But the conversation remains incomplete without the mention of Archies. From Parent's Day cards to cute teddies for loved ones - Archies has been synonymous with gifting for a long time.
But how does legacy translate in the world of 'unboxing eras' and Q-Com?
Hanisha Gandhi, Executive Director, Archies, explained that the brand's focus lies in maintaining a "legacy while speaking the language of the consumer in 2026, who demands even more expression."
She further explained that "Coincidentally, Gen Z has also ignited the wave of nostalgia, the romanticism of handwritten cards, and the actuality of gifts, and we're part of that trend right from the start."
As a business, Archies posted revenue of approximately Rs 76.6 crore in FY25 and claims over 60% market share in India's organised gifting sector, according to company disclosures.
The brand acknowledges the new competition without anxiety. Gandhi noted that the wave of Instagram-native gifting labels has, if anything, validated Archies' founding thesis, "What makes these brands remarkable is that they have confirmed what Archies knew all along: gifting deserves investment from an emotional and aesthetic standpoint."
The strategic challenge is not the legacy; that is the moat. The challenge is building the digital and aesthetic infrastructure to make that moat commercially relevant in 2026, and Gandhi said that they are prepared.
The retail pivot
The most concrete signal of Archies' new direction is the Archies Express format, launched in March 2026, with 20 stores planned across India. The first opened at Unity One Elegante Mall, Netaji Subhash Place, Delhi, chosen for its mix of young professionals, students, and families.
At 200-300 square feet, it is a deliberate departure from the traditional Archies Gallery: minimalist design, tightly curated product mix of lifestyle accessories, stationery, soft toys, chocolates, fragrances, and seasonal collections.
"Our new Archies Express format is our answer to that vision: compact, design-forward, and built for a consumer who has high aesthetic standards," explained Gandhi. "We are rolling out new stores in FY26 because the in-store experience is not just retail; it is brand communication."
Quick commerce: the distribution breakthrough
If the Express format is the long-term retail bet, quick commerce has been the short-term revelation. Since listing on Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart in 2022, Archies has discovered something fundamental about the category. According to media reports, around Valentine's Day 2026 alone, it sold 42,000 soft toys to Blinkit.
Gandhi drew the strategic lesson clearly: "The wrapping sheet story revealed that gift-giving is not just a planned event but also one of impulse, and if Archies is not present when there's a decision to gift, another brand will be."
Explaining further, Gandhi said urgent transactions serve urgency, while physical retailing takes care of discovery, experience, and more reflective purchases. "Both these channels have their own importance and relevance, and are also growing for us."
The marketing machinery
Archies' marketing is occasion-led by design. "Campaigns that are driven by events continue to be our most successful moments: Valentine's Day, Raksha Bandhan, Friendship Day, and occasions when there is intent from the consumers and where we can make our brand presence naturally relevant," she added.
For Father's Day 2026, the brand released an AI-powered campaign titled, "The Mighty Shapeshifter." The campaign pays homage to the different roles that a father fulfils, narrating the transition from the lens of his kid.
Additionally, the brand also leverages creator-led content and quick commerce platforms as an additional consumer touch point.
"Creator-led videos on Instagram and YouTube Shorts have been very successful because authentic communication wins against advertisements in our segment every single time. Quick commerce platforms have also emerged as a separate marketing platform," she said.
Gandhi highlights that content is the new shopfront, which is why the brand focuses on three main things:
Partnerships with creators whose content connects emotionally with their audience
Native content tailored for the specific platform and behaviour type
Boosting user-generated content "since there isn't anything more believable than that"
"The most successful formats we use right now are Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts," she said.
Archies has also been consistent with brand collaborations. Some of the recent ones include the Mother's Day dual-brand collaborations with Yatra, offering curated mother-child travel experiences paired with Archies mementos and Ultimutt a 'For the Dog Mom in You' gifting collection that expanded the definition of motherhood to include pet parents.
Last year, the brand collaborated with MagicPin with the goal of enhancing digital gifting experiences.
On YouTube the brand maintains a steady stream of in-house content in line with the trend of featuring 'own employees'. These include fun Shots that sometimes follow trends, sometimes share memes and sometimes information.
The revenue question
Gandhi framed the last few years of mixed financial performance as deliberate groundwork rather than drift, explaining the rationalisation of their failing stores.
"The hybrid approach that we've been seeing in recent years is by design: the rationalisation of failing stores, optimisation of our cost structure, and laying the groundwork for a truly omnichannel enterprise," she said.
"We know exactly what our growth levers for the next five years look like: the Archies Express rollout, fast-commerce expansion, international growth via partnerships, and an entirely new category of products that are accessible yet aspirational."
Plans ahead
Gandhi outlines the near-term roadmap across three tracks.
On retail: new Archies Express stores in metros and Tier 2 cities, "each following the new design standard."
On quick commerce: occasion-based SKU packs on Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart, "with the ultimate goal being establishing ourselves as the preferred gifting platform".
On marketing: An occasion-led marketing campaign series and enhanced collaboration with creators, along with "an innovative collection that features modern design elements with affordability in mind".
On the IP and collaboration: the brand is consciously evolving beyond legacy licenses like Garfield and Smiley World.
"We are becoming more and more interested in working with Indian artists and designers whose style would give our product line a unique visual identity. The question is straightforward: will this collaboration make us more relevant to the consumer we seek?"
