flow – festival gives newcomers from the Danube area the chance to strengthen their cultural network

From tomorrow onwards flow, the “Festival of Conversation for Culture and Science”, offers 80 artists and scientists from the Danube area in a three-day opportunity to develop sustained projects in open dialogues in Novi Sad (Serbia).

flow targets culture and knowledge producers from ten Danube countries that are on the cusp of their breakthrough. It offers an independent platform enabling participants to sustainably cooperate. Novi Sad, site of the festival and second-largest city in Serbia, is also known as the “the easternmost city of Western Europe and the westernmost city of Eastern Europe”. The initiative of the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs in cooperation with ERSTE Foundation deliberately links different European realms of experience in order to tap the creative potential of the emerging cultural scenes.

Competencies from ten Danube countries
The participants were selected on the recommendation of the eleven members of flow’s advisory board. The advisory board is one key element of flow. Consisting of creative artists and scientists from all participating countries, it expressly couples the projects to local unifying figures. Each country is represented by one member. As flow’s first host country, Serbia is represented by two advisory board members: artist Zoran Pantelić and curator Milan Vracar.

Vracar summarises the significance of flow for the participating countries: “Art should always go before and further than politics. For us in Serbia flow is very important as the country is establishing links to the other Danube countries again. For creative artists from structurally disadvantaged countries – of which Serbia still is one – the project offers the possibility to establish contacts with neighbouring European partners.”

Culture and Science
flow enables open dialogue independent of disciplines or national borders. The project’s broad thematic variety lets biologists meet film directors, architects and writers can share ideas. By means of this approach flow tries to fuel sustained, trendsetting initiatives from the Danube area. The 20-to-35 year old participants are not only seeking success in international projects: As their home countries’ hopes are pinned on them, they support the prospects of the whole region.
