NFC Payments in Retail: Why Contactless Payments Are the Standard Today

Press release from: REA Card GmbH

Contactless payments are now an integral part of modern checkout processes. Customers expect payments to be fast, reliable, and free of long wait times--whether they're using a girocard, credit card, smartphone, or smartwatch. For retailers, this means that NFC-enabled terminals and well-established processes are no longer just an added service, but the standard at the point of sale.

The technology behind contactless payments is called NFC, short for Near Field Communication. Customers hold their payment device a few centimeters in front of the terminal's contactless area; the payment process starts automatically and is confirmed immediately. Manual pairing, as with Bluetooth, is not necessary. The only requirement is that both the terminal and the payment method are enabled for contactless payments.

In practice, problems usually arise not from the NFC technology itself, but from inconsistent procedures at the register. Employees must know how to hold cards or smartphones correctly, when a PIN request is normal, and when to switch to the chip reader. Especially during peak customer traffic, this routine is key to ensuring a smooth process.

Card payments now clearly dominate brick-and-mortar retail. At the same time, an increasing number of payments are being made contactlessly. The girocard, in particular, remains the most important everyday payment method for many merchants. Today, it's standard practice to pay small amounts by card or smartphone--and customers expect the terminal to respond quickly and for staff to provide competent assistance if they have any questions.

Security is also a key concern for consumers. Contactless payments work only over short distances and transmit only the data necessary for the payment transaction. Smartphones and smartwatches utilize additional security mechanisms, such as biometric authentication.

To ensure that NFC payments function reliably, merchants need not only an NFC-enabled terminal but also the appropriate card acceptance capabilities and stable connections during operation. Proper training of the team remains the most important factor for a fast and secure payment process.

Card Payments in Small Businesses: When Does a Terminal Really Pay Off?
When does a card terminal become cost-effective for small businesses? The key factors are the average purchase amount per customer, the card usage rate, and the number of potential abandoned transactions without cashless payment. The 2026 EHI study estimates that card payments account for 65.1 percent of retail sales, while cash accounts for 32.3 percent. For individual payment transactions, the ratio is more balanced: According to the Bundesbank, 50.5 percent are

DSFinV-K: Why Companies Should Review Their POS Data Early On
Many companies only begin to address the issue of DSFinV-K when a tax audit or POS inspection is imminent. However, this is precisely what can become a problem. During an audit, it is not enough to simply submit sales figures or daily closing reports. What is required is complete, structured, and machine-readable POS data that complies with legal requirements. DSFinV-K stands for _Digital Interface of the Tax Authority for Point-of-Sale Systems_
