Osteopathy ( (C) )

Osteopathy ( (C) )

Dautphetal, June 2026 - Osteopathy is one of the best-known manual therapies in naturopathy--and at the same time one of the most frequently misunderstood. heilpraktikerverzeichnis.com explains what the method entails, how a treatment is conducted, and who might benefit from osteopathy.

Hands as the Only Tool

Osteopathy is a manual therapy: the hands are the only tool. No devices, no injections, no medications. What an osteopath looks for are areas in the body where mobility is restricted--joints, fascia, organs, bones. The basic principle: In a healthy body, everything moves--even what appears static at first glance.

The concept was developed by the American physician Andrew Taylor Still in the late 19th century. Still was convinced that the body is capable of self-regulation and that structural disturbances can lead to functional disturbances. This fundamental idea remains the foundation of osteopathy to this day.

In Germany, osteopathy has been an integral part of naturopathic practice for decades, though it is not uniformly regulated. Physicians, physical therapists, and alternative practitioners are permitted to practice osteopathy--provided they have completed the appropriate additional training.

Three Areas, One Treatment

Traditionally, osteopathy is divided into three areas. Parietal osteopathy deals with the musculoskeletal system: the spine, joints, muscles, ligaments, and fascia. Visceral osteopathy focuses on the internal organs and their mobility within the body. Craniosacral osteopathy works with the subtle rhythms between the skull and the sacrum--an area that has not yet been conclusively clarified scientifically and is viewed differently by experts.

In practice, these areas are often integrated, as symptoms rarely affect just one area.

The Course of an Osteopathic Session

An initial osteopathic treatment begins with a detailed consultation. The therapist asks about symptoms, medical history, surgeries, and accidents--because in osteopathy, it's not just current symptoms that matter, but also past events that may have left structural traces.

This is followed by a manual examination: The therapist assesses posture and range of motion and looks for abnormalities. Only then does the actual treatment begin--using gentle manipulations, mobilization, or stretching techniques, depending on the findings. The number of sessions recommended depends on the individual's progress.

Scientific Classification

The body of research on osteopathy is mixed. For certain areas of application--particularly back and neck pain--there is evidence of positive effects. For other areas, the evidence is currently weaker or not yet sufficiently substantiated.

Osteopathy is not a substitute for a medical diagnosis. In cases of unexplained, persistent, or acute symptoms, medical advice should be sought before undergoing osteopathic treatment. Osteopathy is a complementary therapy and does not claim to cure.
