Card Payment Fees: How Merchants Can Accurately Calculate Their Costs
Today, customers expect to be able to pay by card almost anywhere--from retail stores to restaurants to hair salons. For businesses, therefore, the question is no longer whether to offer card payments, but at what cost. However, this is precisely where misunderstandings often arise. That's because the fees advertised by a payment provider often reflect only a portion of the actual monthly costs.Businesses that accept card payments generally pay more than just a percentage of their sales. In addition, there are often fixed fees per transaction, costs for the terminal, as well as service and billing fees. The actual cost incurred in the end depends heavily on individual business processes. A caf? with many small transactions is calculated differently than a specialty store with fewer but higher-value sales.
The so-called "card mix" is particularly important here. Payments made with girocard are usually less expensive for merchants than credit card payments. At the same time, international debit cards or corporate cards can trigger different fee structures. Therefore, businesses should not compare offers based on individual percentage rates, but should always evaluate them based on a typical business month.
In addition to the pure costs, other factors play an important role. These include the quality of support, the contract term, integration with existing point-of-sale systems, and the reliability of the technology used. An offer that seems inexpensive at first glance can quickly become costly in day-to-day operations if system outages or additional administrative burdens arise.
Since card payments now account for the majority of in-store sales, merchants should consider fees an integral part of their cost calculations. Those who understand the key cost factors and compare offers realistically can save money in the long run while simultaneously optimizing the payment service for customers.
