SheComposed - Women Composers in Piano Instruction

The _"Women Composers in Piano Instruction"_ series is a groundbreaking project that consistently places music by women at the center of piano instruction. Initiated by Munich-based pianist Yami CruzMontero in collaboration with musicologist Dr. Ulrike Keil, the publication comprises three volumes of sheet music (Universal Edition--available in print or as a downloadable PDF) as well as an accompanying double CD (Prospero Classics).

The collection brings together 53 works by female composers from 23 countries and covers all levels of difficulty--from the early years of instruction through to advanced performance. In addition to well-known names, the collection deliberately highlights lesser-known and contemporary female composers. A special focus is placed on Latin American piano music, which opens up new rhythmic and sonic perspectives.

In collaboration with Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR Klassik), a double CD was produced and released by Prospero Classics. Eleven pianists--ranging from professors to students--recorded the works in December 2024. Additionally, QR codes provide access to detailed biographies of the composers.

The project builds on current developments in musicology and concert practice that bring the work of female composers to the forefront. The goal is to provide an educational repertoire and to integrate the works of female composers naturally into teaching and concert life.

The project was funded by, among others, the Mariann Steegmann Foundation, Bayerischer Rundfunk/BR Klassik, Muenchener Bank, and musica femina muenchen.

While studying musicology, German language and literature, and sociology in Kiel and Heidelberg, Ulrike Keil already focused her academic interest on the topic of "Women in Music." In 1995, she earned her doctorate with a dissertation on "Luise Adolpha Le Beau and Her Time" (Frankfurt am Main, 1996). During her studies, she worked in the central editorial office of the RISM in Frankfurt. After completing her doctorate, she held teaching positions at LMU Munich as well as at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and Innsbruck. From 1999 to 2018, she worked for a private concert promoter in Munich in the areas of organization, public relations, and program planning. A key focus of her work is the promotion of women composers. In 2018, she initiated the "Starke Frauen" concert at the Philharmonie im Gasteig; in 2016 and 2021, she served as a co-organizer of the conferences "And They Compose and Conduct, After All!" (musica femina muenchen). In 2019, she founded her agency, Dr. Keil Musikpromotion. Since then, she has been conceptualizing and supporting musical projects in the areas of communication and strategic development. As chairwoman of Festival4, she organized the string quartet biennials in 2022 (Pinakothek der Moderne) and 2025 (Bergson Kunstkraftwerk) for the VdSQ.
