When the Island Comes Alive -- The Festival Brings Norderney to Life

When late summer bathes the island in warm light, the sea seems to breathe more quietly, and the days once again taste of vacation, freedom, and wide-open spaces, a special festival season begins on Norderney: From August 10 to 30, 2026, the treppenhausorchester will be returning to the island for the seventh time with the Sea Sounds Festival.

The ensemble is among the most exciting and successful young classical groups in Europe. Through regular performances at Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie and in renowned concert halls across Europe, but above all through its rousing performances, its inexhaustible creativity, and its special connection with the audience, the treppenhausorchester has earned a large fan base and deep admiration.

On Norderney, this special energy manifests itself in a form that fits the island perfectly. Here, music is not confined to a classical concert hall. The Sea Sounds Festival transforms the entire island into a stage: music resonates right by the water, in the dunes, on the mudflats, at the lighthouse, in the bathhouse, on bicycles, in the spa square, and of course in the concert hall. The sound of the sea and magical melodies merge into an experience that is not only heard but felt.

The festival is aimed at families, children, classical music lovers, and curious visitors alike. It invites you to rediscover classical music: accessible, surprising, moving, and often found where you least expect it. Sometimes we sing together, sometimes we dance, sometimes we hike; at other times, the audience listens to the sounds as the sun sets or even while floating in the water. The result is a late-summer celebration that brings the island to life--open, vibrant, and full of special moments.

The Program in Detail

Monday, August 10, 2026, 7:00 p.m. -- Opening Concert

To kick off the Sea Sounds Festival, works from around the world will be performed on the Kurplatz. Accordion, oboe, and string quartet will present a program that takes listeners on a musical journey from sunrise to sunset. A festive open-air opening that immediately sets the festival's atmosphere.

Monday, August 10, 2026, 8:00 p.m. -- Sea Sounds Connect: Afterglow

Following the opening concert, the Afterglow event in the Orangery invites guests to mingle. In a relaxed atmosphere, guests can wind down the evening, chat with the musicians, and share their first impressions of the festival.

Tuesday, August 11, 2026, 11 a.m. -- Children's Concert

The Treppenhaus-Streicherlis take children of all ages on a musical journey around the sea. In cooperation with the Wattwelten Visitor Center, a child-friendly concert experience full of stories, sounds, and discoveries is created.

Tuesday, August 11, 2026, 4 p.m. -- Sing Along

We'll sing together in the dunes. No prior experience is necessary--the focus is on joy, voice, community, and the island's unique acoustic space.

Tuesday, August 11, 2026, 7:00 p.m. -- Sea Sounds Connect: Folk Dance Class

A convivial evening of folk dances, circle dances, and barn dances. All steps will be explained so that even beginners can join right in.

Wednesday, August 12, 2026, 11 a.m. -- Children's Concert

The children's concert centered on the sea is back. Music, imagination, and the world of the Wadden Sea come together to create a special experience for families.

Thursday, August 13, 2026, 12:15 p.m. -- Your Personal Emergency Concert

At the Emergency Concert, the Treppenhaus Quartet responds musically to the audience's "emergencies," big and small. A humorous, accessible, and very personal concert format.

Thursday, August 13, 2026, 8:34 p.m. -- Sunset Concert: Wood Works

Scandinavian folk music in virtuoso arrangements for string quartet meets the sunset over Norderney. A poetic festival moment between the North Sea sky and Nordic timbres.

Friday, August 14, 2026, 6:00 p.m. -- Picnic Concert

Make yourself comfortable on the Kurplatz: a picnic blanket, treats, and music come together to create an open-air experience full of joie de vivre, rhythm, and summery lightness.

Saturday, August 15, 2026, 7 p.m. -- Eight in One Go

Two string quartets merge into one large ensemble. The program includes Mendelssohn's famous Octet and Dvo??k's "American" Quartet--chamber music full of energy and expression.

Saturday, August 15, 2026, 8:00 p.m. -- Sea Sounds Connect: Afterglow

Following the concert, the Orangerie once again invites you to a shared afterparty--with conversations, drinks, and encounters between the audience and musicians.

Sunday, August 16, 2026, 9:30 a.m. -- Mudflat Concert

A mudflat hike becomes an open-air concert hall. Tuba and bass clarinet meet the sounds of nature, vast open spaces, and 400 years of music history. The event is organized in cooperation with the Wattwelten Visitor Center.

Sunday, August 16, 2026, 8:30 p.m. -- Forest Spirits

A stairwell rave blending drum and bass with Balkan beats: tuba, bass clarinet, and digital collaborator FRANCES create an energetic concert experience with a club atmosphere.

Monday, August 17, 2026, 3:00 p.m. -- Bike Concert

In this event, the island itself becomes a musical route. The audience cycles to special locations on Norderney where music and landscape enter into dialogue. Reservations are required.

Monday, August 17, 2026, 7:00 p.m. -- Sea Sounds Connect: Beer & Music

At the Norderneyer Brauhaus, the focus is on casual encounters. Music, conversation, and a relaxed atmosphere make this evening an interactive festival moment.

Tuesday, August 18, 2026, 10 a.m. -- Sea Sounds Connect: Hike to the Shipwreck

On Tuesday, a group hike will take us to the eastern end of the island through the nature reserve to the old shipwreck. This Connect event does not feature a concert, but instead focuses entirely on interaction, experiencing nature, and being out and about together.

Wednesday, August 19, 2026, 11 a.m. -- Crawling Concert: Big Instruments -- Little Listeners

For babies and toddlers aged 0 to 4, music becomes a very immediate experience. The tuba and bass clarinet invite you on a first sound adventure.

"Wood Works" resounds once again at the foot of the lighthouse. Scandinavian folk melodies for string quartet meet vastness, evening light, and one of the island's most striking backdrops.
