Ugandan author and actor Asaba Jumah has welcomed the passing of the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2025, describing it as a major step forward for the country's creative industry.
The newly passed legislation is expected to strengthen intellectual property protections for musicians, authors, filmmakers, and other creatives while improving royalty collection and enforcement against piracy.
Speaking after the development, Asaba Jumah encouraged young creatives to take intellectual property rights seriously and use the opportunity to protect and monetize their work legally. According to him, the future of Uganda's creative economy depends on creators understanding the value of ownership and originality.
"This is an important moment for creatives," Asaba Jumah said. "Young artists, writers, and innovators must learn the importance of protecting their work and building sustainable careers through intellectual property rights."
The Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2025 was passed by Parliament earlier this year and is seen as a landmark reform for Uganda's growing creative sector. The law introduces stronger copyright protections, improved royalty systems, and tougher penalties for infringement and piracy.
Creatives across the country have celebrated the move, saying the law could help artists and authors benefit more fairly from their work both locally and internationally. Industry stakeholders also believe the reforms could improve investment and innovation within Uganda's entertainment and publishing industries.
Asaba Jumah further called on upcoming creatives to educate themselves about copyright laws and digital publishing as the industry continues evolving in the modern era.
