Founded in 2012, NYCxDESIGN has become one of the most significant annual design festivals globally, attracting leading designers, institutions, brands, galleries, and over 100,000 visitors each year through exhibitions, talks, installations, and cultural programming across New York City.
Within this international context, "Becoming" stood out for its interdisciplinary curatorial approach and its integration of contemporary art, design, installation, and experimental visual practices. The exhibition examined themes of identity, perception, time, interaction, and spatial relationships, inviting visitors to reflect on the evolving connections between individuals, environments, and creative expression.
To ensure a rigorous and internationally oriented selection process, participating works were reviewed by a jury panel consisting of artist and curator Janet Rutkowski, former Tate Chelsea Gallery director George Madarasz, art professional Danae Li, and award-winning creative director Hanwei Su.

The opening reception on the evening of May 16 drew particularly strong attendance, transforming the exhibition into a vibrant gathering point during NYCxDESIGN Week.

The evening featured a live performance by New York-based musician ZenHow, whose practice blends Hip-hop, Jazz, and traditional Chinese instrumentation into a contemporary cross-cultural soundscape. His performance introduced an additional sonic dimension to the exhibition experience, reflecting themes of hybridity and transformation explored throughout the show.
Special guest artist and Augmented Info Systems co-founder Austin Stanbury also presented an immersive media performance during the opening. Through real-time interactive visuals and digital media interventions within the space, the performance further expanded the exhibition's exploration of perception, interaction, and spatial relationships.
The opening additionally included an artist panel discussion, where participating artists were invited to share reflections on "Becoming," identity, and their creative processes, offering audiences deeper insight into the conceptual frameworks behind the exhibited works.
Following the formal program, the evening transitioned into open networking and exhibition viewing, with artists, designers, founders, curators, and members of New York's creative community continuing conversations throughout the night.
