Atelier MVDR Opens for Business in Heerlen from 1 June 2026

Hand-crafted contemporary furniture studio by Martijn van de Rijdt begins accepting commissions

Atelier MVDR, a new studio for hand-crafted contemporary furniture and woodworks, officially begins accepting client commissions on 1 June 2026. Founded and operated by designer and maker Martijn van de Rijdt, the atelier is based at Jan Campertstraat 5 (Unit 17.0.06), 6416 SG Heerlen, in the historic C-mill - a former Philips factory complex that has been transformed into a hub for creative and innovative businesses.

Martijn van de Rijdt brings a unique combination of disciplines to his craft. With a background in architecture-focused engineering and studies at the Arnhem Arts Academy, he spent 26 years working internationally in humanitarian aid and web development before returning to the Netherlands and his primary passion: designing and making furniture by hand. His internationally recognised web work includes an open-source tool widely used in humanitarian data collection.

"I lean toward traditional hand-tool techniques - not just for the superior finish they produce, but for the intentional, quiet focus they bring to the workshop," says Van de Rijdt. "Each piece is made to balance functional precision with unique character."

Atelier MVDR creates custom furniture and other woodworks, working directly with clients who seek distinctive, carefully made pieces. The studio is open to commissions as well as creative collaborations. Prospective clients with projects that offer a creative spark are invited to make contact. Depending on the nature of the project, Atelier MVDR can work on a standard commission basis or on a no-obligation-to-buy arrangement with right of first refusal on the finished work.
