Why are in-person events still so popular despite the abundance of digital alternatives?

Because our human behavior and well-being are tied to direct contact. Even at conferences (and certainly in meetings and workshops), the spontaneous encounters during breaks and (unintentional) networking are moments when collaborative ideas emerge, which are later discussed further and, in the best case, developed further.

In-person formats increasingly aim to foster relationship-building, networking, trust within the industry, as well as emotional engagement and shared experiences--as a counterpoint to online formats where everyone remains isolated.

This isn't possible with long lectures that allow for little participation. The opposite is true: interactive concepts are being offered, and moderation is also meant to be participatory, involving the audience. Moderated networking is also on the rise. How does that work?

In the past, there was a room somewhere in the back for networking. Coffee machine and bar tables included. Otherwise: emptiness.

Today, there are moderated networking sessions as part of events and conferences. The result is that (almost) everyone actually gets to talk, make acquaintances, feel comfortable doing so, and even wants to participate in and win competitions. Moderated networking creates a completely different atmosphere than a stiff conference where 60% of attendees don't talk to each other because they don't know anyone there.

Admittedly, you have to be open to it, but if the majority does it, the rest will follow. The goal is for all participants to feel personally at ease and confident, which frees them up and lets their thoughts flow. This allows for genuine exchange; the event receives high ratings, is remembered, and is happily booked again.
