Marian University Spotlights Its Historic Connection to

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., May 11, 2026 -- Marian University, a private Franciscan institution located just minutes from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, is highlighting its deep-rooted ties to the Indianapolis 500 as the iconic race continues to draw global attention to the city. With historic mansions on campus once owned by founders of the Speedway itself, Marian University offers students a uniquely Indianapolis experience grounded in heritage, innovation, and community pride. [https://www.marian.edu/]

The Indianapolis 500 is widely regarded as the largest single-day spectator sporting event in the world, with attendance projected to exceed 300,000 fans this year. First held in 1911 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the race has grown from a regional automotive testing event into a global cultural phenomenon. Over more than a century, it has shaped Indianapolis into a worldwide motorsports capital, fueled regional economic growth, and served as a proving ground for breakthroughs in automotive engineering, safety, and design.

Marian University's Indianapolis campus sits roughly a 10-minute drive from the Speedway, and its connection to the race extends well beyond geography. Two of the university's most recognized landmarks, the Allison Mansion and the Wheeler-Stokely Mansion, were built in the early 1900s by James A. Allison and Frank Wheeler, two of the original co-founders of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Today, these architectural treasures continue to serve the campus community, with the Allison Mansion housing the President's Office and hosting alumni and special events, and the Wheeler-Stokely Mansion serving as the Office of Admissions [https://www.marian.edu/conferences-and-events/wedding-and-special-events.php].

That heritage extends into the student experience itself. Each May, the energy of race season becomes part of campus life. Marian students regularly serve as 500 Festival Princesses, with the official Princess Ceremony hosted in the Marian University Theatre. Journalism students cover the race and surrounding events, business students contribute to real marketing initiatives tied to Speedway operations, and engineering students gain hands-on exposure with motorsports-related companies in the area. These experiences give students access to fast-paced, real-world environments that are difficult to replicate at universities outside the Indianapolis market.

Beyond the race itself, Marian's location places students at the center of a vibrant local network of internships, alumni connections, and citywide cultural events. From the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon to ongoing community partnerships, students benefit from a campus experience deeply integrated with the city's history, industry, and future. The university's commitment to experiential learning aligns naturally with the spirit of innovation and teamwork that the Indy 500 represents, offering valuable lessons in leadership, communication, and operational excellence across academic programs.

"Our campus carries more than a century of Indianapolis history, and our proximity to the Speedway gives students opportunities to learn, work, and grow inside one of the most iconic cultural events in the world," said a spokesperson for Marian University.

As race season approaches, Marian University continues to celebrate the legacy that connects its campus to the founding of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway while preparing students for careers shaped by that same culture of innovation.
