PRECOPLAT Expands Its Activities in the Defense Sector
PCBs "Made in Krefeld" for mission-critical applications."When we talk about defense and security, it's no longer just about steel, but about reliable electronics that work under all conditions," emphasizes Andreas BRueGGEN, Managing Director of PRECOPLAT. "We provide exactly this foundation: robust, cleanly manufactured, and traceable down to the last layer of material. No marketing fluff, just honest technology you can rely on."
Precoplat, a manufacturer of high-precision printed circuit boards "Made in Germany," is expanding its scope of operations and increasingly tapping into applications in the defense sector. In doing so, the company is responding to the growing demand for reliable, security-critical electronic components while simultaneously strengthening its role as a dependable partner within European supply chains.
Production in Krefeld is currently being specifically tailored to the requirements of defense, second-source, and dual-use projects. This includes expanded material approvals, seamless process monitoring, and testing procedures in accordance with IPC-6012 and IPC-A-600 Class 3. "We are already working on several projects with security-related implications," explains Katharina VOeLKER, Managing Director at Precoplat. "Our commitment remains the same as always: the highest precision, predictable delivery capability, and full control--from data verification to final acceptance."
The decision to expand into the defense sector was carefully considered and follows a clear strategic direction: long-term stability, technological sovereignty, and regional value creation. Precoplat sees this as a contribution to Europe's resilience and to strengthening critical infrastructure. At the same time, the company is committed to handling data and security-related applications responsibly and in compliance with the law, in accordance with the regulations of the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union.
"Ultimately, it's about reliability--and that's exactly what we've been delivering for years," Brueggen sums it up. "We see this as the logical next step: If our technology has been functioning for years in the civilian sector under the highest demands, then it will also function where it really counts."

The family-owned company PRECOPLAT is now in its second generation, led by siblings Andreas BRueGGEN and Katharina VOeLKER. It operates a highly automated production facility capable of manufacturing all standard sizes--unpopulated single- and double-sided PCBs, multilayer boards with up to 24 layers, and semi-flexible boards--at its production site in North Rhine-Westphalia, which has expanded to 25,000 square meters.
The history of PRECOPLAT begins in the early 1970s in the basement of a nightclub: Inspired by the film "Saturday Night Fever," restaurateur Manfred VOeLKER wanted to jump on the bandwagon of modern disco equipment with an elaborate lighting and sound design. To save costs, VOeLKER collaborated with several electronics students; who were "in his debt" due to their excessive partying, developed circuits based on copper-clad Pertinax boards. Tired of years in the restaurant business but deeply fascinated by this technology, VOeLKER recognized the commercial potential of printed circuit boards and founded PRECOPLAT Praezisions-Leiterplatten-Technik GmbH in Krefeld in 1977.
To this day, the entire manufacturing process--from work preparation to final electrical testing--takes place under one roof. From its humble beginnings as a "basement startup," PRECOPLAT has evolved into a state-of-the-art medium-sized company with currently about 75 employees and an annual turnover of twelve million euros.
