HRhelpdesk Releases White Papers on HR Accountability in the Digital Workplace under India's DPDP and IT Acts

HRhelpdesk has released a two‐part practitioner‐led white paper series titled "The Digital Workplace and HR Accountability", examining how Indian HR functions must reinterpret their roles under modern digital workplace laws, particularly the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act and the Information Technology Act.
As organisations become increasingly dependent on workplace technology, digital communication tools, HR systems, surveillance infrastructure, and electronic records, HR practitioners are no longer responsible only for people policies. They are now directly accountable for how employee data is handled, how workplace technology is governed, and how employee conduct in digital environments is regulated.
The first paper in the series focuses on employee data protection, privacy, and consent under the DPDP framework, translating legal obligations into practical HR decisions across recruitment, performance management, investigations, engagement activities, and post‐employment data retention. It highlights how routine HR practices such as resume sharing, birthday communications, employee photographs, grievance handling, and vendor engagement can expose organisations to statutory and reputational risk if personal data is processed without clear purpose or consent.
The second paper examines HR accountability under the Information Technology Act, shifting the conversation beyond cyber security teams and legal departments. It explains how email usage, messaging platforms, access rights, digital signatures, electronic acknowledgements, electronic records, and misuse of credentials are all governed by law and intersect directly with HR policies, disciplinary processes, and investigations. The paper highlights how everyday HR situations such as data removal by exiting employees, inappropriate digital communication, impersonation, unauthorised access to systems, or poor access controls can escalate from internal policy matters into statutory offences with civil and criminal consequences.
Across both papers, the central theme is that HR is no longer merely a people function, but a governance function for workplace data, technology, and digital conduct. The papers emphasise prevention over post‐incident response, calling for clearer HR accountability, stronger policy design, documented controls, employee awareness, and consistent enforcement.
