Manilla ensemble made of copper and copper alloys, various eras, West Africa

Manilla ensemble made of copper and copper alloys, various eras, West Africa

Innsbruck, April 11, 2026 - New research by Austrian mineralogist and market researcher Mag. Alexander Sarlay sheds new light on the historical importance of the region of Tyrol in the development of early global trade networks. At the center of the study are the exceptionally large quantities of silver and copper mined in Tyrol during the 15th and 16th centuries, which influenced economies, monetary systems, and trade relations far beyond Europe.

Schwaz, in particular, developed into one of the most important mining centers in Europe during this period. Historical sources indicate that at times up to 85 percent of Europe's silver production originated from this region. At the same time, copper was mined in large quantities and became a strategically important raw material in early global trade. While silver from Tyrol played a key role in the development of the European monetary system and is closely linked to the history of the thaler-later regarded as a precursor to the dollar-Tyrolean copper formed the basis of extensive trade relations between Europe and Africa.

Large quantities of Tyrolean copper were transported via trading hubs such as Antwerp and Lisbon to the West African coast. There, it was used in the form of manillas-ring-shaped objects made of copper and brass that served as a means of payment, a status symbol, and an expression of economic order. This highlights that metals from Tyrol not only shaped European markets but were also deeply embedded in the economic and social history of West Africa.

The research further shows that Africa was already an important strategic trading region for Europe at an early stage. Even before Christopher Columbus embarked on his famous westward voyage, he participated in a Portuguese expedition to West Africa. In 1482, he sailed to the Gold Coast and was associated with the construction of Fort São Jorge da Mina in Elmina. These early encounters helped establish Africa in the European perception as an economically significant region and influenced Europe's subsequent expansion.

A key role in this system was played by the Fugger trading family. They controlled large parts of the European copper trade and organized the distribution of metals from Tyrol to international markets. Through their economic power, close connections to ruling houses, and strategic agreements with Portugal, they ensured that Tyrolean silver and copper had an impact far beyond Europe. What oil, gas, or rare earths represent for the global economy today, silver and copper from the Alps represented at that time.

The findings also emphasize that West Africa was by no means merely a recipient of European goods. Rather, the region was an active participant in complex trade networks. The integration of manillas into existing economic and cultural systems demonstrates how dynamically African societies engaged with global flows of goods and incorporated them into their own structures. Africa thus appears not as a peripheral region of history, but as a central arena of early globalization.

Tyrol itself was also integrated into this early phase of global interconnectedness. The Tyrolean Balthasar Springer, who took part in the 1505/1506 India expedition on behalf of the Welser family, documented one of the earliest large-scale trading voyages of German merchants via the African route to India. His journey from Lisbon around Africa to the Indian pepper coast illustrates how closely the interests of Upper German trading houses, Portuguese expansion, and the supply of metals from Tyrol were intertwined. Springer thus represents an era in which Tyrolean raw materials became part of a new global economic system.

Mag. Alexander Sarlay approaches these historical connections from an interdisciplinary perspective. As a market researcher, he has conducted numerous field studies for companies in Africa. These practical on-site experiences repeatedly give rise to scientific questions, which he pursues through in-depth research. His work combines business practice, historical analysis, and the study of global trade structures. At its core lies the question of how historical flows of raw materials, trade objects, and processes of cultural exchange continue to shape the present.

These findings underline that Tyrol was far more than a regional mining center. The quantities of silver and copper extracted there influenced Europe's monetary system, transcontinental trade, and the economic interconnectedness of multiple continents. Tyrolean metals shaped world history to an extent that is only now receiving renewed attention.
