Parliament of Streams

Parliament of Streams

Solo Exhibition
by Carlos Monleón

curated by Anne Faucheret

Duration: 17.04. - 13.06.2026
Location: DAS WEISSE HAUS, souterraine
Address: Hegelgasse 14, 1010 Vienna, Austria

Opening: Thursday, April 16, 2026, 6 pm

Carlos Monleón's Parliament of Streams immerses the audience's bodies in an audio(visual) dispositif that alters terrestrial positionality and rearranges the sensible. It plunges visitors below the surface of waters, allowing them to engage with what usually remains below their attention. Following a team of scientists researching the underwater ecosystems of the Danube River and some of its tributaries, the artist developed specific sound recording devices to gather materials, which he then translated, transformed, and transmuted into multilayered and spatialized sonic and material compositions. The installation interlaces different scales and rhythms; superimposing different textures, sculpted materials, and frequencies in a 'poetics of interscalarity' that dwells on the interdependence of mental, social, and environmental ecologies.

Parliament of Streams - title inspired from Bruno Latour's 'Parliament of Things' - is an artistic socio-technical dispositif. It operates as an arrangement of heterogeneous elements - technologies, discourses, materials- that organizes affects and knowledge and points to the silenced more-than-human voices in the governance of water bodies. The work aims at reactivating humans' sensitivity for bodies of water and the expressions of the species composing and inhabiting them, evoking a sense of strange conviviality, wonder, and kinship.

The goal of DAS WEISSE HAUS is to maintain a vibrant platform that empowers emerging talents and centers overlooked perspectives through amplifying critical voices, nurturing collaborative learning, and enhancing international recognizability.

As of 2024, under BLOCKFREI Collective's leadership, DAS WEISSE HAUS will strengthen its position as the vital link between universities and academies, exhibition venues, large and small cultural institutions, and the art market. By fostering togetherness and encouraging dialogue and exchange, the collective directorship with the support of DAS WEISSE HAUS's dedicated team will work on cultivating a dynamic, experimental, and inclusive space where diverse voices converge through art, questioning and dismantling systemic barriers and advocating for equal representation and economic justice.

Each year, the program will be centered around a specific annual topic. In 2026, DAS WEISSE HAUS explores the theme IN(TER)DEPENDENCE, a reflection on how we relate, rely, disconnect, and coexist in an increasingly complex world. We live in the strangest of times - the most interconnected and the most alienating times. We can instantly know and see what is happening on the other side of the world yet it often seems that developing and nurturing deeper bonds with fellow humans in our immediate surroundings is becoming harder and harder. In a world driven by neoliberal agendas of productivity and hyper-individualism, concepts of independence, dependence, and interdependence have taken on renewed significance. These themes carry distinct but interwoven connotations, influencing the understanding of relationships-between people, communities, systems, species, and the environment. IN(TER)DEPENDENCE offers a framework for understanding our shared existence on this planet, one that moves beyond the limitations of independence and dependence.
