The Appeal of Rugby for Girls: Girls' Day at the Hamburg Rugby Club on March 28, 2026
Hamburg, March 16, 2026 - On Saturday, March 28, 2026, the Hamburg Rugby Club (HRC - hrc-rugby.de) is hosting a major rugby event at the Rugby Arena in Stadtpark. As part of Girls' Day, girls and all interested children aged 4 to 14 will have the chance to try out the team sport with no obligation, train together, and experience the unique atmosphere of a match day up close. In addition to approximately 130 young players from the HRC, the club expects 30 to 50 more girls who would like to try the sport for the first time. The grounds on Saarlandstrasse will therefore be teeming with young talent on this day--a lively event that is likely to attract both the local press and families.
Overview of the event schedule:
10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.: Trial session for the U14 age group
11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: Trial session for younger children (U6 to U12)
2:00 PM: Highlight of the day - home game of the 1st Men's Team against SG RU Hohen Neuendorf
While the morning is all about basic athletic skills, taught in a playful manner by experienced coaches, the focus is also on camaraderie. Family members, friends, and curious onlookers are warmly welcome to watch the action from the sidelines. Snacks and drinks will be plentiful. A special moment awaits in the afternoon: In keeping with the day's theme, the players of the 1st Men's Team will be led onto the field by girls serving as accompagning girls.
Successful initiative continues
With this Girls' Day, the HRC is continuing a project that was successfully launched last year. The club already hosted a similar event on October 11, 2025, to mark International Day of the Girl. At that time, girls from the Hanseatic city and the surrounding area had the opportunity to learn about rugby, practice together, and interact with the active members of the women's team.
The club's main goal is to attract even more girls to the sport of rugby and make it as easy as possible for them to get involved in this team sport. Rugby embodies essential values such as teamwork, respect, and fair play, and creates a valuable sporting environment for young players.
History of Rugby in Hamburg
Although the official founding of the Hamburg Rugby Club dates back to 1950, it is rooted in traditions that can be traced back to 1898 in the city. Today, the club, with its Bundesliga team, is one of the established powerhouses in the German rugby landscape. At the same time, the HRC places a strong focus on youth development and the expansion of its women's division.
Through events like Girls' Day, the club aims to show girls and young families in particular that rugby is an inclusive sport open to everyone--regardless of prior experience or athletic ability.

About the Hamburg Rugby Club
The Hamburg Rugby Club (HRC), officially founded in 1950, can look back on a rich history dating back to 1898--when the first players took to the field in their distinctive red and black uniforms. From its origins as a primarily community-oriented club, the HRC has evolved into a modern sports club with clear athletic ambitions.
Since 1990, the HRC has placed great emphasis on youth development and offers rugby training for children and teenagers aged 4 to 18. Currently, around 150 young talents play at the HRC, where the joy of the game and personal development are the focus.
Rugby thrives on diversity--and it is precisely this diversity that defines the Hamburg Rugby Club. Regardless of origin, religion, or sexual orientation, people from all backgrounds find an open and inclusive home here. In addition to rugby, the club also offers a platform for the sport of p?tanque at its boules hall in Langenhorn.
For over a century, the Hamburg Rugby Club has stood for team spirit, passion, and equal opportunity--values that continue to define the club today.
