Getting Girls Excited About Rugby - Girls' Day at the Hamburg Rugby Club on March 28, 2026

Hamburg, March 16, 2026 - The Hamburg Rugby Club (HRC - hrc-rugby.de) invites you to a big rugby action day at the Rugby Arena in Stadtpark on Saturday, March 28, 2026. On Girls' Day, girls and children between the ages of 4 and 14 will have the opportunity to learn about the team sport of rugby, train together, and experience the special atmosphere of a match day.

Around 130 children and teenagers from the HRC will participate, and an additional 30-50 girls are expected to try the sport for the first time. As a result, the field on Saarlandstrasse will be filled with young athletes on this day--a lively event that will delight local media and families alike.

The event begins in the morning with introductory training sessions for various age groups. From 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the U14 age group will train, followed by a session from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for children in the U6 to U12 age groups. Under the guidance of experienced coaches, participants will learn the basics of rugby in a fun and playful way.

In addition to the training, the focus is above all on the shared experience: families, friends, and interested spectators are invited to spend the day on the sidelines and experience rugby up close. Refreshments will also be provided.

A special highlight awaits in the afternoon: At 2:00 p.m., the HRC's men's first team will play its home game against SG RU Hohen Neuendorf. On this special day, the players will be accompany onto the field by girls serving as ballgirls.

Continuation of a Successful Initiative

Girls' Day builds on an initiative that the HRC launched last year. On October 11, 2025, the club hosted its first Girls' Day to mark International Day of the Girl. Girls from Hamburg and the surrounding area were able to try out rugby, train together, and get to know players from the women's team.

The club's goal is to get more girls excited about rugby and make it easier for them to get started in the sport. Rugby instills values such as team spirit, respect, and fair play, and offers children and young people a sporting community.

Rugby with a Long Tradition in Hamburg

The Hamburg Rugby Club was officially founded in 1950, but its rugby traditions in Hamburg date back to 1898. Today, with its Bundesliga team, the club is one of Germany's established rugby clubs and places great emphasis on youth development and a growing women's division.

Through events like Girls' Day, the club aims to show girls and young families in particular that rugby is a sport for everyone--regardless of experience or athletic background.

About the Hamburg Rugby Club

The Hamburg Rugby Club (HRC), officially founded in 1950, can look back on a rich history dating back to 1898--when the first players took to the field in their distinctive red and black uniforms. From its origins as a primarily community-oriented club, the HRC has evolved into a modern sports club with clear athletic ambitions.

Since 1990, the HRC has placed great emphasis on youth development and offers rugby training for children and teenagers aged 4 to 18. Currently, around 150 young talents play at the HRC, where the joy of the game and personal development are the focus.

Rugby thrives on diversity--and it is precisely this diversity that defines the Hamburg Rugby Club. Regardless of origin, religion, or sexual orientation, people from all backgrounds find an open and inclusive home here. In addition to rugby, the club also offers a platform for the sport of p?tanque at its boules hall in Langenhorn.

For over a century, the Hamburg Rugby Club has stood for team spirit, passion, and equal opportunity--values that continue to define the club to this day.
